The Morgan Tucker Greensome is a popular event for the mixed in Tenby. So popular, in fact, that this year it was decided to make it an Open event.
Sadly, for many of our local clubs, it clashed with events of their own, but we did have visitors from as far away as St. Pierre and Alice Springs. Hopefully, word will spread that we offer three visitor prizes and more will come next year. All the visitors that did play said that they found the course was testing, but most enjoyable.
The third visitors’ prize of two Tenby towels was won by Su Coombe and Graham Smith from St. Pierre with 34 points. Second with 35 points and winning a voucher for a fourball on Tenby’s magnificent links were Mary Lewis from South Pembs and Brian Jones from Birmingham and Tenby. The first prize of a night in the Dormy plus two rounds of golf was won with 36 points by Ann and Phylip Richards, also from St Pierre.
They thanked their playing partners from Tenby, David Morgan and Laura McQueen, and said it was a bit of a grudge match as they had been beaten by them earlier in the year when a friendly was held at St. Pierre.
Graham Smith also won nearest the pin on the 12th. The Pro V-1 balls he won will surely make up for those he lost on the course!
A new venture was nearest the second pin in two. This is not a long par four, but with the wind in our faces, not so easy on this occasion. However, Maura Gunning and Roger Schooling made light work of that one.
Only two 2s were recorded. David Morgan missed the sixth green, but Laura still putted in to get the two. Allan Morton nearly had a hole in one on the sixth, but it just crept an inch past for Trevayne Keohane to slot in.
This format usually gets scores in the mid-40s, but the points were not that high this time. Three pairs were on 40 points; John and Fair Ball, Lewis Hurlow and Georgina Ormond and Mervyn Tucker and Heather K. Morgan, with the latter taking the third prize on the back nine.
In second place with 41 points were Allan Morton and Trevayne Keohane, but with 43 points, the winners of the Morgan Tucker Trophy were Rebecca Naden and Paul Bradley. Having played early in the morning, they had gone home thinking there was no chance of winning, so Allan made a speech thanking Heather and Laura for running the event, and his playing partners who he thought were going to win until the wheels came off.
A very big thank you to Iris Davies and Judy Brew for running a very successful raffle, to David and Laura, and Liz Storey for being starters, and to Ben for sending everyone out from the Pro Shop. Thanks also to Lee, Emma and Lauren for the fabulous Sunday lunch. Everyone agreed it was worth coming just for that.
The next silverware event for the mixed is the 125 Anniversary Greensomes Medal on Saturday, September 19, which will be going on the computer for members at the end of this month. There is also a Friday Friendly Foursomes on August 28 at 4 pm. It would be lovely to see more men venturing into this social event. That can already be entered via the computer.
