What is the correct term for a group of senior golfers? - is it ‘A Mature’ possibly ‘A Wrinkle’ - I don’t know, but whatever the term, it was 38-strong on Tuesday, when after a week’s enforced absence due to the weather, the Seniors were able to play their third eclectic competition.
Thirty-eight is the biggest turnout for many a year - are we becoming popular? The weather this week was excellent, considering we are into November, and the course was in great condition - even if not every pitch mark has been filled by the person digging the hole.
An interesting day for me, on the 17th hole I sliced my tee shot viciously into such deep rough that I bade it farewell. Teeing up a second ball, I gave it a thump, hoping to salvage a point - when lo and behold, the keen eyes of my playing partner Mel Neale watched it roll straight into the cup! I’ve never had a hole-in-one before - I still haven’t! - but that was close - and I still scored three points, as the photograph shows.
The top dogs this week were: In 4th place with 37 points - Jim Martin. In third place with 40 points - Des Stone, whose handicap moves from 19 to 18 as a result. Second place went to Derek Cole, also with 40 points, but beating Des on the back nine holes, Derek improves his handicap by 0.8.
The clear winner, with 41 points - Peter Woodhouse, whose handicap plunges from 23 to 22 after this fine performance. Peter has been telling me about a set of bladed irons that he fancied, being offered on Ebay - well he recently took delivery of the said clubs, and didn’t he put them to good use?
The CSS for the tournament was 38 Stableford points, which the top three players exceeded with ease.
Steve Cole, Idwal David and Dudley Williams scored twos on the sixth, as did Bill Davies and Brian Arthur Jones on the 17th. There was not a single hole in one -dammit!
Before the prize-giving, captain Peter revealed that the Seniors’ Eclectic Cup had been located, and the engraving brought up to date. In a brief, but touching ceremony, he presented it to Mike Fox, who won it in 2013/2014 - before snatching it back to present to Bart Youll, the 2014/2015 winner, who gets to keep it for a year, and to polish it lovingly as he recounts his winning skills to any Cosheston dweller who will listen!
Remember to get your name down and your £50 deposit paid to Stan Hudson for the Spring outing - always a great occasion.
