Fine weather and a full field on Sunday; what could be better for the Morgan Tucker Greensomes Trophy? It seems everyone wants to get their name on it.
Sadly, our gallant captain went to support the Tenby men in the Welsh Team Championships in Milford Haven, but thanks to Ken Gouldsbrough for stepping in at the last minute to take his place.
Scoring is always high in this format, but surprisingly there were no twos recorded. However, eight lucky people won their entry fee back in the bag draw. They were Georgina Ormond and Lewis Hurlow, Paul Bradley and Rebecca Naden, Roger Schooling and Maura Rimell, and Barrie Frayne and Trevayne Keohane.
Fourteen pairs scored 37 points or more, which meant they could come in with their heads held high!
Three pairs scored 40 points apiece, which would be a great score in any other format, but in third place with 43 points were Paul Bradley and Rebecca Naden. (Good week for Rebecca who won the Ladies' medal on Thursday.).
The two top pairs had 44 points. Just missing out on countback were Idwal David and Sarah Waring (again! Better luck next year Idwal). Winning the trophy this year were Allan Morton and Fair Ball. Yes, the same Allan Morton who moaned in the last mixed competition that low handicappers did not stand a chance in these mixed competitions. He graciously accepted the prize (and the criticism), and thanked his partner Fair for her good play, and Heather and Mervyn for putting up the trophy. All agreed it had been a good day.
We now have a feast of mixed events to look forward to. On Bank Holiday Monday, August 26, there is an Open Mixed being run by the house cmmittee. Top prize is a voucher for £100, so definitely worth getting your name down for. There are forms by the back door, or speak to Dave Blackmore or Bob Parsons. Entry fees should be paid in to the office.
On Sunday, September 1, the captain has introduced a competition to win a new shield to celebrate the club's 125 years as an affiliated club. This can be entered via the computer and will be another Greensomes, but this time a medal round.
Finally, the last Friday Friendly Foursomes of the year will be on Friday, September 13. The list is already up for this and we would like to make it a bumper social night to round off the season.
