ST. CLEARS RFC 17 pts. PEMBROKE DOCK HARLEQUINS 68

The Quins made up for their 15-10 defeat at Bierspool in February with an emphatic win over lowly St. Clears on Saturday, scoring no less than 10 tries in the process.

It took the Quins just two minutes to get on the scoresheet when second row Martin Cully picked up a loose ball near the line and scored halfway out. Outside-half Lewis Davies converted to put the Quins 7-0 in front.

On 10 minutes, the Quins scored their second try when fullback Damien Miller, with a ferocious hand-off, touched down in the corner. This time Lewis Davies hit the post with the conversion.

A third try was not long in coming; this time it was number eight Stefan Halward who raced in from 30 yards out to touch down under the posts. Lewis Davies popped over the conversion.

The Quins now seemed out of sight with their 19-0 lead, the home side finding things very difficult in containing the pace of Damien Miller and the power of centre Jack Price.

The bonus point ty was not long coming when Damien Miller sped away to touchdown under the posts. Lewis Davies converted, and for the Quins it looked like job done.

Ten minutes later, Damien Miller completed his hat-trick of tries when he finished off a strong run from Jack Price. Needless to say, Lewis Davies converted.

The Saints, however, did manage to get on the scoresheet when number eight Dafydd Walters scored after the Quins defence was outflanked. Fullback Chris Rodenhurst converted, but it was the Quins who had the last say in the half, when once again Damien Miller breached the defence before sending left wing Jake Griffiths over for their sixth try, again converted by Lewis Davies, who passed 100 points for the season.

With the score at 40-7 in the Quins’ favour at the break, things were looking ominous for the home side.

It did not take long for the Quins to strike in the second half. This time it was centre Thomas Doyle who, with a superb dummy, raced through the gap he had created to touch down near the posts for his seventh try of the season. Lewis Davies added the extras.

Next up was a close range try for captain and hooker Neil Brace, who touched down in the corner. Lewis Davies converted effortlessly with a magnificent kick to push the score out to 54-7 in the Quins’ favour.

St. Clears’ veteran prop Andrew Deakin touched down for an unconverted try, before Damien Miller hit back with his fourth try of the match and his 18th of the season. Lewis Davies converted to give the Quins a 61-12 lead.

Flanker Harry Owen had the honour of putting the Quins’ try count into double figures when he showed a clean pair of heels before touching down near the posts. Lewis Davies added his ninth conversion of the match, before the Saints grabbed a third and consolation try through flanker Matthew Dansk, which went unconverted.

The Quins had five changes in the pack from the previous encounter with Pembroke, but with three Youth team players, Jack Davies, Liam Scourfield who had a fine game, especially in the lineout against more experienced opposition, and Harry Owen, who had a storming game in the loose, richly deserved their win.

Team: Damien Miller, Dan Goodridge, Jack Price, Thomas Doyle, Jake Griffiths, Lewis Davies, Elliot Lewis, Jack Davies, Neil Brace (capt), Nathan Abrahams, Liam Scourfield, Martin Cully, Mike Davis, Harry Owen and Stefan Halward.
