PEMBROKESHIRE’S Joe Allen has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35.

An exclusive programme will follow his personal journey towards retirement on S4C on 5 June.

The Narberth-raised footballer, who has made 77 international appearances for Cymru, confirmed Swansea City's match against Oxford United on Saturday as his final professional appearance after returning to his boyhood club in 2022.

Born in Carmarthen and a former pupil at Narberth Primary School and Ysgol y Preseli, fluent Welsh speaker has made nearly 200 appearances for the Swans, including during his initial stint between 2007 and 2012.

He has also enjoyed spells at Liverpool and Stoke City after taking up the sport with his local team Tenby up the the age of 10.

A fan favourite with the Red Wall, Allen made his senior international debut for Cymru under John Toshack against Estonia in 2009. Over the course of the next 16 years, he played a key role as Wales qualified for EURO 2016 with his performances earning him a place in the UEFA Team of the Tournament.

He was also an integral part of the Cymru teams that qualified for EURO 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Following his announcement that he is stepping back from international football, an exclusive programme will follow his personal journey towards retirement on S4C on 5 June.

Joe Allen: Y Chwiban Olaf will show Joe's final months playing internationally and celebrate his glittering career for Wales.

The documentary will be broadcast ahead of Wales' international matches on S4C on 5 June at 21:00 on S4C, Clic and iPlayer.

The programme will follow Joe throughout his last season of professional football with Swansea and coming out of retirement for Wales.
