GORSEINON 23 pts
TENBY UNITED 29
Molson Coors, Andrew Price and FBM sponsored Tenby United will go into tomorrow's (Saturday's) eagerly-awaited league encounter with local rivals Haverfordwest with confidence off the back of three good wins in Division Three West.
Their visit to Gorseinon on Saturday saw a strong Seasiders outfit take the top spot after scoring five superb tries on the way to their third bonus point win in as many games.
It was the experienced Gorseinon side that scored the first try of the game within just five minutes when, following a fast paced start to the game, the home side secured possession and their strong backline were able to move the ball to centre Nicky Jenkins, who managed to squeeze into the corner for the score, which was converted by fullback Callum Richards, to give the confident Swansea side the lead.
The young Seasiders were not rattled by the early hiccup and soon settled into their stride and, led by second row Chris 'Cone' James, they were becoming the dominant side and looking to spread the ball wide through their talented backline and with strong direct running from centre Toby Smith and quick support from the forwards, were able to put Gorseinon on the backfoot.
It was the relentless pressure from the Seasiders who were playing well in all areas that saw them score three good first half tries through flanker Jason Ronowitz, who had a fine all-round game, wing Dan Colley and new signing Damo Miller, who crossed for his first try in a Tenby jersey following his move to the Seasiders from Pembroke Dock earlier in the year.
One Jonathan Rogers conversion added to the Tenby tally and a Gorseinon penalty from Richards meant that the Tenby side went into the interval seven points to the good at 17-10.
The Seasiders came out following the half-time oranges determined to move the ball and give their opponents the runaround, and they did just that.
Using good quality set-piece ball, scrum-half Rogers was able to get the very talented threequarters moving and they started to stretch the spirited Gorseinon defence; cracks began to show with forwards linking with backs to hit holes and provided the platform needed to launch their attacks.
It was only a matter of time before the Seasiders registered more points on the board and the first came courtesy of Toby Smith after he took a pass from Colley and threw a dummy which enabled him to show Gorseinon a clean pair of heels on his way into the line to score a fine try, which Rogers converted, giving Tenby their third bonus point in three games.
Just one minute later, Callum Richards slotted a Gorseinon penalty after a Tenby offence.
The home side were unable to get a foothold in the game, though, and were unable to breakdown the Tenby defence led by skipper James. They also struggled to contain the Seasiders' attacking plays and one more score came from the in-form Tenby XV through their 'Portuguese' centre Jack Guerreiro after talented number 10 Lloyd Thomas caused the home defence big problems before sending 'Guru' in to score. Rogers again converted the touchdown to give Tenby a lead off 29-13 with half-an-hour to go.
The Seasiders maintained their form for the remainder of the game, playing entertaining rugby in the right areas, and were by far the dominant side.
However, the home side did manage to stretch the Tenby defence to cross for two unconverted tries of their own, closing the gap on the Seasiders.
Following this last-ditch effort by Gorseinon and a lapse in concentration, the final score was 29-23 in the United's favour, a scoreline that most would agree didn't reflect the dominant display the Seasiders had put on.
Although they won comfortably and showed signs of being a very talented side, the Seasiders are under no illusions that the season is going to be easy and that they will remain grounded and continue with their hard work and commitment to training.
The Seasiders welcome Haverfordwest to Heywood Lane tomorrow (Saturday).
The game is at home, not away as printed in the fixture lists, due to a swap to accommodate a function at the visitors' club tomorrow.
Although they are at opposite ends of the table and the Seasiders boast three wins from three games, they will be the first to tell you that this is going to be their toughest game yet and, when it comes to these derby games, recent form and results are irrelevant and they will be expecting and training for a strong Haverfordwest side to come to Heywood Lane and will be confident but cautious.
The last time the two clubs met was at the end of last season in the Knockout Cup final when Haverfordwest ran out winners. If that game is anything to go by, this game is sure to be very entertaining and supporters are urged to come and enjoy it and cheer on their local sides. Kick-off is 2.30 pm. Refreshments will be on sale and large crowds are expected.
Tenby fielded: Aled Bowen, Dan Colley, Toby Smith, Jack Guerreiro, Damo Miller, Lloyd Thomas (Sam Davies), John Rogers, Pat Roberts, Luke Hansford, Jason Ronowitz (Adam Ball), Luke Dedman, Chris James (captain), John Palmer (Lyndon Jones), Wes Bonser (Nicky Guymer), Rob Clark.
