Some fantastic scores were submitted last Saturday at Tenby GC. The Saturday Swingers held their annual Swingers' Day which was played in conjunction with the club's June Monthly Medal.
In the terms of the weather, it was a very pleasant day, albeit far from benign, yet the 39 Swingers who took part came in with an average score in excess of 34 points!
In fact 36 points, last year's winning score, was good enough for just a share of 10th place, 37 points for joint seventh, 38 points for joint fifth and 39 points for joint third!
The two best scores of a memorable afternoon came from the final two groups. In the penultimate trio, left-hander Paul James posted a magnificent 41 points, which he must have considered to be good enough to win.
However, the last three ball included the highly competitive Dai Cope, a classic shotmaker reminiscent of the great Ben Hogan in his prime. Dai matched Paul's 41 points and claimed the Swingers' Shield by virtue of a better back nine. Dai's great round also won him the monthly medal and the Dave Merritt Trophy.
The Ralph and Phil Johns Shield is awarded to the Swinger with the highest aggregate of Stableford points from his 12 best cards during the previous year. Going into the final Saturday, realistically there were three in contention, Peter Rossi, Ross James and the leader Darren Thomas, with just three points separating them.
Darren, the 2011/2012 champion, was away on holiday. Peter, also a previous winner, has suffered a dip in form recently and failed to improve on his lowest score.
Thus the door was left open for Ross who had sneaked up on the blindside since early May. Although nervous, he was extremely focused and scored an unbelievable 24 points on the harder front nine. Ross relaxed a little on the home stretch, but his 39 points increased his season's aggregate by six and he therefore became a clear and deserved King of the Swingers for 2012/2013 with an average of in excess of 37 points over 12 rounds.
The inaugural Swingers KO final was also contested. Back in October 2012, the pool stages began with all 56 Swingers involved. The knockout rounds started with 16 and Martin Morris and Andy Cope eventually reached the final.
Martin is a regular winner of Swingers' silverware and Andy has recovered well from a recent knee operation. On the day, Martin triumphed and thus became the first ever winner of the Swingers Knockout.
Following the golf, a very enjoyable evening took place. This included an excellent meal - a big thanks to Dave the chef and Matt the barman who worked hard all day. Lots of raffle prizes were handed out, although a few still have to be collected! President Dai has promised some new jokes for next year!
