Saundersfoot Sports Club (sponsored by LG Leisure and Get Stuffed Pizza) played in the final of the Jimmy Allen Cup on Monday evening, against the Power Station Club from Pembroke.
Saundersfoot were keen to avenge their semi-final loss in the Knockout Cup to the same team last week, and with their superstar Steve Cook back, they had a great chance.
Format was two singles and doubles, with aggregate scores to count.
The first singles saw Dave Wooles play Ian Forrester. Dave was determined to get Saundersfoot off to a good start, with their two weakest players (Glyn and Steve Barlow) on next in the doubles. Dave started well and the safety exchanges were excellent, but he managed to open up an early 20-point lead, only for Ian to come back to within two by mid-frame.
Indeed at that stage it was anybody's game, but as the game got to the colours the Power Station man had edged ahead by 14. Dave continued to battled on to try and reduce this deficit, as points were vital, being aggregate scores, but he was then unlucky to go in-off on the blue to seal his fate by 33 points.
The first doubles saw Glyn Davies and Steve Barlow play Paul White and Mike John. Glyn and Steve were really playing for pride as they were up against two cracking players (it was all about the score at the end). Early on, Glyn was once again playing poorly, while Steve was producing some excellent safety, but as the frame got midway, it was the Power Station boys who held a 15-point advantage and 48 overall. Again the Saundersfoot boys battled on bravely, but the gap continued to widen and by the end they had lost by 39 points.
Now 72 behind overall, the second singles saw returning hero Steve Cook playing Lee Goldsmith. Steve had it all to do (but if anyone could do it, Steve could), and he started brilliantly, opening up a good early lead. As the frame got mid-frame, Steve was 10 points up and he continued to pot well and by the colours was 42 to the good. Lee came back with a few good pots of his own to reduce the deficit to 34 with pink and black left, which crucially Steve took to win by 47 in the end.
With the deficit cut to 25 overall, the second and last doubles saw Mark Cleevely and Darren Morgan play Mike Rees and Paul Grimwood. The Saundersfoot boys found themselves 14 points adrift early on and 39 overall, but this was early days! As the frame got mid-frame, the difference was down to three and 28 overall. It was proving a close contest and by the colours the Saundersfoot pair had managed to get their noses in front, but were still 11 down overall.
Nailbitingly, it all came down to the final black, which Saundersfoot potted to evenutally win a thrilling match by 207 points to 200.
