Twenty-year-old Harry Owen, from Begelly, achieved both of his targets at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow recently. Harry, who led the Welsh gymnastics team to a highly creditable fifth place in the team final, had said before the games, "Individually my goal is to hit six clean routines for the team. We are there as a team and we want to go through as clean as possible and hit a top five finish in the team final. If we can do that, it will be a great for us and a building point leading up to the next Games. "My main role in the team is the consistent worker. I'm going to be going up first on every apparatus, purely because I have shown consistency in my routines. My skills are not the very highest of difficulty, so I'm not looking for apparatus finals, but to get the best execution I can for the team and then hopefully make the individual all-around final." Harry's performances in the team final and the all around drew some complimentary comments from the national press and BBC commentary team 'There was tense competition for bronze in the men's event as Australia and Wales both threatened Canada. The Welsh team, led off by the charismatic Harry Owen, executed their lower-difficulty routines with a team spirit so joyous that at one stage it looked like they would all take to the parallel bars together'. Harry made the all-around final and performed well under the pressure of competing against the world's best gymnasts, finishing 20th out of the 24 gymnasts who made the final. After the high of the athletes village, its back to training soon for the Loughborough student who has taken time out recently to do some gymnastics demonstrations behind the scenes for some of the male celebrities, Carl Froch and 'H' from Steps, who are taking part in the BBC's new Saturday night show 'Tumble'. He has also been shooting a short advertising film for a new clothing company featuring him doing various gymnastic routines in an industrial warehouse setting. Harry will next compete for Wales at the Northern European Championships in Denmark in September where the Welsh team, after their excellent display in Glasgow, have their sights firmly focused on a team medal. Then he's off to Germany to compete for his third season in the 'Bundesliga' which attracts some of the world's best gymnasts. After winning a bronze medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games and making the final in his first Senior Commonwealth competition, Harry already has his sights set on the next Commonwealth Games on Australia's Gold Coast in 2018
