The race for the title of Dyfed League Division Three champions is being contested by four golf clubs, with only two points separating them all having played the same number of matches, leaving only two matches remaining to decide who shall be promoted to the higher level.

Tenby are one of the contestants in the race, with the others being Aberystwyth, Glyn Abbey and local rivals Trefloyne Golf Club. All four have an equal opportunity to win this prestigious title, but it will all be decided on the final day's play before the victors can be crowned.

The penultimate match for Tenby was against a formidable Derllys Court team who had come to the Burrows with the firm intention of winning and securing their position in the league for next season.

The weather was fine and dry, but the famous Tenby wind was playing its part and as it blew into the players' faces from the west, it made controlling the ball extremely difficult.

The pairings of players had been carefully selected so as to take full advantage of the handicap allowances provided under the rules of the competition.

The first pair to tee-off involved the club president, Mervyn Tucker, playing with an excellent golfer who has returned to the club after a break from sport for a few years, Ben Childs, who after his rest period, is still capable of playing off a handicap of one and is a welcomed new member to the team. Ben Childs and Mervyn Tucker took on the best that Derllys Court could offer and came off the course victors by one hole, an excellent contest from some of the best golfers on show that day.

The second pairing of Dan Cope and Darren Thomas continued the winning trend by defeating their opponents 2 and 1 and they were quickly followed into the clubhouse by Gary McNeilly and Peter Rossi, again victors by 5 and 4. This put the home team three matches to nil in the lead.

Nick Thomas and John Stenson made the team victory assured when they won their contest by 5 and 3, giving the incentive to the remaining players on the course that every additional win could provide the bonus points required for the league title.

Team captain Chris Beecher and his partner Paul Jenkins continued their winning ways by defeating their rivals by 2 and 1, leaving Dai Cope and Viv John in the unenviable position of not being the pairing to lose their match as the contest was being very keenly fought and the result was taken to the final putt on the last green, which saw the Tenby pair emerge as victors by one hole.

This left only one pair out on the course, Tony Key and Idwal David, and if they were to win, then Tenby would gain maximum points from this fixture, putting the team in a very strong position in the title race. True to form, they won their match 3 and 1, giving the team a clean sweep, which sent a message to their rivals of their intentions to win this league competition.

After the intensity of the competition on the course, it was a welcome relief to spend some relaxing time with friends in the clubhouse and be served an excellent meal whilst partaking of the liquid refreshments on offer.

The last match of the golfing calendar for the Tenby team is to take place tomorrow (Saturday) at the Burrows against local rivals, Trefloyne Golf Club. The team selected is on display in the clubhouse and it is requested that anyone unable to play must contact Chris Beecher or Tony Key immediately so that a suitable replacement can be found.

The result of this final encounter will determine who will be the Division Three champions for 2012 and, with this in mind, the strongest possible team has been selected to take on a visiting side that is being shown the utmost respect and recognition of their golfing prowess.
