Kilgetty's first team started their league campaign with a home game versus Carew seconds last Thursday. With the squad decimated by unavoidable absentees, which inevitably seem to happen with mid-week games which are scheduled at the start of the season, Kilgetty took some time to adjust against a strong Carew side. After some minor positional adjustments, Kilgetty began to get a foothold in the match, and started to play the passing game that has been a feature of their pre-season training, and friendly games. With such a high turnover of players on the night, it was inevitably presenting a big challenge to the players to maintain this style of play, especially under the pressure of a hard-working and resolute Carew team. It was to the huge credit of the home players that they stuck to the task, with everyone giving maximum effort, perhaps personified by the indefatigable Shaun Lewis, who gave everything in the team cause. Chances were relatively few, and the teams turned around at half-time with honours even. Most of the threat from Carew came from dead ball situations, and early in the second half, a ball crossed diagonally from the right wing found the head of a Carew forward Hatdn Shapcott, who headed low and into the corner, past home custodian Sam Franklin. With the game time quickly running out, another tactical adjustment from the coaching team saw holding player Leon Phillips and fullback Kim Parmanand pushed up, with Grant James playing just behind, creating more than a few anxious moments in the Carew defence, but without any goal-scoring success. Again, perhaps a fairer reflection of the game might have resulted in a draw, but all the Kilgetty players can be proud of the effort that they gave throughout the game, and once all available players are back, then hopes are high that a successful season for both teams in the club will follow.
