The club has been very active over the Christmas and New Year period. Congratulations go to Joe Protheroe for becoming the 2014 Club Champion after an epic and successful year. Recent results follow.
December 13, Mid Week Match: Ten competitors booked in with relatively light hearts due to the calm and clear conditions which were promised. Some talk remained of a significant ground swell from recent bad weather which was not to be ignored, particularly if some hardy souls ventured to the rocks.
Joe and Barry started the night on 117 points apiece, with no prospect of being caught from the pack, so the Mid Week Champ would be one or the other. The Mid Week Aggregate leader was Nev and, although he started with a healthy cushion, nothing could be taken for granted after Joe, Pugs and Garf found good mixed bags from Saundersfoot on the previous Mid Week.
Lydstep, Saundersfoot, Stackpole and Tenby were the declared venues for the frolics, with no prospect of rain. Cards were kept close to respective chests during the evening and a picture of the fishing only emerged at the weigh-in. Some dogfish had been winkled out, together with a solitary small huss for Paul Jenks and a couple of three-bearded rockling. Ollie tripped across one of these and immediately nipped to joint top of the species chase on 15, jointly with Nev.
The match results showed that Barry had just done enough to pinch the Mid Week Points title from Joe. Nev had maintained his cushion to triumph in the Mid Week Aggregate.
With two prizes, the match results were - 1. Paul Jenkins, Huss, 0.980kg; 2. Nev Andrews, bag, 2.305kg.
December 20, Fur and Feather: The match saw a number of key club championship battles coming to the boil nicely in addition to the Ex-Servicemen's Cup, the Committee Shield and the usual £75 voucher on offer for the winner. Supplement this with £50 and £25 vouchers for second and third and a variety of quality money or kit prizes for all who weighed in and a recipe for a good match had been compiled for the 16 competitors.
A number of venues were suggested as the best prospectively, with Saundersfoot favourite, but a couple of the sneaky old-timers fancied Amroth for the expected surf. They were right on the surf, but no one had told the flounders or, more importantly, five-bearded rockling.
The usual suspects quietly went about their flounder bashing, but with no reports during the match, apart from a well-hidden rumour of a codling for Nev, the weigh-in was where it would all be revealed. And still it rained back at the finish, the match managers' dream team of Joe and Lewis were rattling through the weigh-in, which was almost exclusively flounders. Nev claimed to have caught a dog, but then explained that he had a bad cold and in fact, he had a cod (ling!). Solitary flounders were the order of the day, except for Pugs, Julian, Ben and (ooosh!) Lewis, who bettered that. So it wasn't a storming return fish-wise, but then the Fur and Feather is always a struggle!
Results were - 1. Nev Andrews, Codling 0.892kg; 2. Pugs Protheroe, bag 1.918kg; 3. Julian Davies, Flounder 0.626kg; 4. Olllivaaaaaar, Flounder 0.505kg; 5. Lewis Brann, Flounder 0.445kg; 6. Joe Protheroe, Flounder 0.433kg; 7. Dyfrig Allen, Flounder 0.422kg; 8. Adam Roberts, Flounder 0.412kg; 9. Ben McDonnell, 0.392kg.
At the Ex Servicemen's, Wayne had kindly provided chips, butties, rolls and snacks, which was very much appreciated. Barry and Louvain Taylor had achieved their customary 'Prize Heaven' for the throng to indulge on the raffle! A few pints were sunk, young Jess Protheroe worked her socks off helping Mand with the raffle duties and everyone went home with something. An excellent day, weather notwithstanding.
December 28, Coppet Hall 'Christmas Clear Out' Match: After Christmas and before New Year, what else is there to do but fish in sub zero temperatures? Ten anglers booked in and it was cold, flat calm and good, you would think, for winter species. Well the pin whiting complied, a few dabs were hauled in and the rods were bouncing maniac like, but often just bare hooks were retrieved. At the weigh-in and after the frozen tea was cracked off the top lips, just the one dogfish for Nev had been winkled. Mike Dixon had pinched a few dabs and a rockling, but it had been slow all round.
Results were: 1. Nev Andrews, LSD 0.670kg; 2. Mike Dixon, bag 0.754kg; 3. Joe Pro, Flounder 0.487kg.
As a result, Nev claimed the Aggregate and Beach titles and Ollie shared the Species in Comp League with Nev.
January 4, Vice Presidents' Trophy, Pendine: Well, well, well. What a cracking start to the year. Chill was the wind and lumpy was the sea... and unusually, obliging (for most) were the flatties! Sixteen anglers entered the first match of the year for the Vice Presidents' Trophy and for the expectation that a flounder would be their first species of the year! Mixed feelings were expressed during the match, catch-wise, but there was definitely a lurking icy edge to the breeze. We avoided the rain, it warmed up a little during the match and on the slip, waiting to be let off, many happy, smiling faces (or was it wind?). Anyway, whilst it hadn't been a true 'stormer' of a Pendine bash, it wasn't a half bad way to kick-off. Everyone weighed in and Bob Willing set a personal best along the way to 'victory' with a cracker of a flat. Well done Bob, who had the heaviest bag of fish as well as the heaviest fish.
Results were - 1. Bob Willing, Flounder, 0.844kg; 2. Ollie Gibson, bag, 2.406kg; 3. Dyfrig Allen, Flounder, 0.688kg; 4. Julian Davies, Flounder, 0.649kg.
And, to top it all, 23.26kg was the total weight to start the club's chase towards 500kg. Caramba!
January 8, Mid Week Match: Fifteen anglers kicked off the Mid Week series after a very successful opener at Pendine on the previous Sunday. We welcomed Scott Brunton as a new member and with the anglers able to choose their locations, it was a hopeful throng that scattered to Saundersfoot, Lydstep, Stackpole, Hakin and Angle.
The forecast was for a wet and windy end to the night and as we returned, there were many soggy faces. But, in the main, they were pretty chirpy.
As the weigh-in progressed, we could see that LSD, huss, codling, five-bearded rockling, three-bearded rockling, pouting, whiting, dab and poor cod had all been carded. Credit to Joe and Lewis for keeping 'best of order' at the scales and the results showed all but two anglers had weighed in.
After enduring his 'nemesis' Pendine a few days before, Lewis almost smiled as he realised he had been victorious.
Results - 1. Lewis Brann, Huss, 1.727kg; 2. Adam Roberts, bag, 2.742kg; 3. Scott Brunton, LSD, 0.885kg
So, two matches, nine species and 50 kg already recorded, a very solid start to 2015 indeed. Long may it continue!
