At the end of March the Sunday Salver, donated several years ago by Ann Marsden at the end of her captaincy, was played. This competition draws a good entry as it is an opportunity for all sections of the club to play together. The Salver was won by Maura Rimell with 36 points and the runners-up were Anne Wilks and Vicky Burks, both on 31. The Challenge Bowl qualifying round should have been played on April 3, but the entry was too low. However, Denise Edwards completed the Medal round as did Helen Hughes, both with scores they would rather forget in very poor weather! The April GUW Medal was won by Pam Cole on nett 73 from Heather Morgan on nett 77. Helen Morgan won the nine-hole Stableford with 17 points. April is the month in which national qualifying rounds are played. The Australian Spoons Foursomes were won by Sue Griffiths and Linda Thomas on 39 points from Helen Morgan and Maura Rimell on 38. The postponed Challenge Bowls Medal Qualifier was played the following week and the Silver Division qualifier was Rebecca Naden on nett 72 on the back nine from Pam Cole. In the Bronze Division, Laura McQueen had an extensive purple patch and recorded a nett 65 (school holidays make a difference to all sorts of activities!), while Bev Owen was second on nett 74. In the nine-hole Stableford, Ann Follon had an excellent score of 22 points and Rita Collins was second on 17. We wish all the qualifiers success in their succeeding rounds.
Daily Mail Foursomes
Heather Morgan and Rhian Walters continued their run with a second round win over the Milford Haven pair of Barbara Philips and Liz Durwood and now await their third round opponents, hoping for another home draw.
TENBY Ladies do well in County Championship
Last week, on April 22 and 23, the Carmarthen and Pembroke Ladies' County Golf Association held their annual Championship at Carmarthen. Five members of Tenby took part - Sophie Lovatt, Heather Morgan, Amber Thomas, Georgia Thomas and Rhian Walters. In the gross Medal qualifying round, Rhian was the best qualifier on 78 and won the Joan Gale Cup, Sophie was fourth on 86, Georgia fifth on 87 and Heather sixth also on 87, and they became eligible to compete in the top flight of eight in the matchplay stages. Amber recorded the second best Junior score, but went on to caddy for her sister. In the top flight matchplay, the first round results were as follows: Rhian beat Jane Lindquist (Carmarthen) 5/4; Georgia had a good win over Sophie; Heather beat Lucy Davies (Glyn Abbey) 3/2. The semi-final results were: Georgia beat Rhian 5/4; Vicky Thomas (Carmarthen) beat Heather 5/4. These matches were rain affected very severely and play stopped for a time to allow the greens to be cleared. Finally, Georgia played Vicky in a very close match, which eventually Georgia won with the last putt on the last green. We are delighted with Georgia's success - it is not often that Vicky, with her vast international experience and obvious expertise, is beaten in matchplay, particularly on her home course. Well done Georgia.
Opening Ceremony
In the middle of April, many of the section attended the opening of the Dormy accommodation and covered driving range, by Edwina Hart and Phillip Price, respectively. We were all impressed with the two developments and were delighted that Celia Bartlett, the current GUW president, was also present. She had returned the day before from Augusta where she represented all Welsh golfers at a number of special events put on by the American Golf Societies and the host club, for the Masters Tournament.
West Wales
The first 2014 meeting of the West Wales Ladies Golf Association for the Founders Cup took place at Cardigan on April 25. The Stableford Single Competition was run in three divisions. In the second division, Irene Gilman won the Alys M. Jones Trophy with an excellent 43 points, while Bev Owen won the third division Coronation Salver for her fine 39 points.
