Last weekend saw most of the best amateur golfers in Wales compete for the Carmarthenshire Open at Ashburnham on Saturday and then for the Golden Eagle at Tenby on Sunday. These are both 36-hole competitions and the player with the best 72-hole aggregate score claims the Trubshaw Cup.
Despite a stiff south-westerly breeze, several low scores were returned at Ashburnham, including three rounds of 69.
Tenby's Dan Farmer unfortunately bogeyed the last three holes in his second round and finished on 144, a score matched by Josh Davies, of Celtic Manor, who had won the Duncan Putter a fortnight earlier.
Matthew Hill, of Leighton Buzzard, who had never previously played golf in West Wales, was runner-up on 143. However, a comfortable winner of the Carmarthenshire Open was Jack Bush, of Morlais Castle, with rounds of 71 and 69 for a total of 140.
The wind at Tenby the following day changed completely to a easterly. In the morning round, Bush came in with a 72, which was equalled by Llanwern's Owen Edwards. There were four on 74 - Mitchell Reid, of Celtic Manor, Tom Davies, of Penrhos, Dean Morris, of Swansea Bay and David Ramsay, of Mold.
In the afternoon, the wind strengthened and thus the scores generally worsened. The best round was a 73 by Adam Wilson, of Mold, and Lee Jones, of Conwy, came in with a 74.
Over the two rounds at Tenby, three golfers totalled 150 - Bush, Edwards and Wilson. However, they were pipped by one shot by Morris, who claimed the Golden Eagle.
Over the weekend and 72 holes, only four players were able to break 300. Melding finished on 299. Patrick Mullins, of Whitchurch, totalled 298. Edwards was one better on 297.
However, despite fading with a 78 in his fourth round, Bush aggregated 290 and thus he was an easy winner of the prestigious Trubshaw Cup. Jack is an amiable young man with a promising future in golf. This week he will be taking part in the Irish Amateur Open at Royal Dublin whilst other Welsh amateurs will be competing in the Lytham Trophy in Lancashire.
