The sun shone and the green was green again - all in all the perfect setting for the Valero Pairs to end the competition season at Tenby Bowling Club.
As the sun set and the temperature began to drop, it was Tenby’s own John Roberts and Michael Jackson who lifted the trophy with a 9-4 victory over locals Craig and Luke Guymer in the Final at the end of a long day of top class action at Sutton Street.
24 pairs had set out at the start of the day with their eyes on the Valero trophy.
Once again, the biggest pairs tournament in the west brought Finley Williamson all the way from Cheltenham looking to repeat the successes of local father Lee, himself a multi-tournament winner at Tenby.
Winner of two English under-age titles this season, and surely destined for greater success in the future, Finley’s luck was out today as he chased the silverware, but one local player in particular caught the eye with a display of determination and skill.
Eight year-old Parker Rees has already made headlines this year, becoming the youngest-ever player to represent the Tenby first team, and partnering dad Luke today, the pair battled through the group stages to enter the quarter-finals.
To reach the last eight of a senior competition is a stand-out achievement, and Parker and his family can be extremely proud of his achievements this year.
With the competition season over, Tenby greenkeeper Andrew Muskett and his squad can look back with pride at the high quality of surfaces they prepared throughout the most difficult season: the wettest winter in recent memory being followed by the driest summer.
