THE annual Pembroke Dock Bowling Club Open Week tournament took place last week at the stunning Memorial Park green.

Competitors in the three competitions battled for a place in the finals played on Friday afternoon in front of a good crowd of spectators.

Normally, its rain that halts play. This year for the first time in living memory, it was the heatwave that saw play suspended on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.

Play resumed in the early evening; however, the temperature was still in the mid-30s. It was more like Ibiza than Pembroke Dock!

Sudbury Bowl

The final saw Brent (Madri) Davies (Pembroke Dock BC) take on Dave Kingdon (Llanelli BC), excellent bowling by both players saw Brent lifting the prestigious trophy.

Alfred Phillips Bowl

The Blue Riband event saw Dave Kingdon battle with Hugh Williams (Pembroke Dock BC). A titanic battle between two excellent bowlers resulted in Hugh winning the match – commiserations to Dave on being runner-up in both finals.

TRT Jones Shield

Players eliminated during the first few days of the tournament competed for the prestigious shield. The trophy was donated to the club by Hugh Williams as a tribute to club stalwart Richard Jones who passed away suddenly in 2024.

The final saw a closely fought battle between Daniel Bassett and Hugh Colley (both Pembroke Dock BC) with Daniel receiving the shield from Mrs Evelyn Jones.

The tournament was a huge success thanks to the following: Haydyn John-Davies (organiser), the greenkeepers for preparing an excellent playing surface, the ladies for preparing refreshments, the bar staff for keeping players and spectators hydrated, Collette Bethwaite and Richard Hissey (Umpires) who officiated throughout the week and to Dave and Louise Kingdon (Bowls Kingdom) for their continued support.
