CARRUTHERS SHIELD

TENBY 112

ABERYSWYTH 61

The Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby side were in Carruthers action last weekend.

Aberyswyth were the day's opponents, who were in confident mood after knocking out previous winners Pontrhydyfen. Good news was, that for a change it actually did not rain all afternoon!

On rink one, Neil Dickinson, Joe Richards, Luke and Graig Guymer had a somewhat comfortable afternoon. With the whole rink in top form, they kicked off with a five and ended with a five, blowing the opposition away by 15 shots.

Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, Mike Jackson and John Roberts had a similar afternoon on rink two. John, returning after a successful international series, led his men into an early lead and controlled the game from then on, running out impressive 16-shot winners.

Luke Rees, Aaron Lloyd, Peter Day and Andrew Muskett were up on rink three. With the two Tenby youngsters outstanding up front, the opposition struggled from the off, never able to get a foothold in the contest. As has been all season, the reliable Peter and Andrew steered this impressive rink to a massive 20-shot victory.

Cameron White, John Baggott, Pat Currie and Paul Diment had the only real battle of the whole match on their rink. Eight-one down after four ends, the Tenby foursome clawed their way back at the halfway stage and from then on it was nip-and-tuck all the way, with an honourable draw the final outcome.

This was the first time this year that the Tenby team have all 'clicked' at the same time and a 51-shot demolition of the opposition was the net result.

Captain John Webb was delighted with his team's efforts which takes them into the last 16 with another home game against Old Landorians of Swansea in a week's time.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Aberyswyth skips only):

Neil Dickinson, Joe Richards, Luke Guymer, Craig Guymer 27; R. Salmon 12.

Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, Mike Jackson, John Roberts 27; D. James 11.

Luke Rees, Aaron Lloyd, Peter Day, Andrew Muskett 34; I. Pugh 14.

Cameron White, John Baggott, Pat Currie, Paul Diment 24; G. Gillis 24.

Five Arches 71 Milford Haven 81

An important game for the Five Arches against one of the teams below us in the table. A good result against Milford would go a long way to keeping us in the division. However, things do not always go to plan.

On rink two, Ashley and his rink of Stuart, Harry and Tony were up against experienced skip Roy Thomas and were comprehensively put to the sword. Trailing by 17 shots to four at tea, the Five Arches quartet rallied in the second half to win seven of the remaining 11 ends, but still suffered a 28 shots to 14 defeat.

Harold, skipping for the first time this season, ably supported by Mike, Jim and Johno, started well and led by 11 shots to eight at tea. However, a fightback from Gareth and his rink in the second half gave them a 24 shots to 14 victory.

Our most successful skip Ray, and his rink of Ben, Ben and Steve, suffered a rare defeat. In a topsy turvy game, they trailed by 13 shots to three after 12 ends, but fought back to be one shot behind after 17. The Milford foursome rallied and held on to win by 19 shots to 17.

Tony, with his new rink of John, Joe and Ken, were the bright spot of the afternoon. They were always in control, leading by 11 shots to four at tea, and they continued in a similar vein to win by 24 shots to 10.

A disappointing result for the Five Arches, losing at home. However, with eight games to go, there is still time to recover from this defeat and try and remain in the first division.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, Milford skips only) were:

Stuart Askew, Harry Meades, Tony Powling, Ashley Hooper 14; R. Thomas 28.

Mike Gouldingay, Jim Taylor, John Hubbard, Harold Ebdon 16; G. Barrett 24.

Ben Sheldon, Steve Davies, Ben Simmons, Ray Taylor 17; T. Elyatt 19.

John Rees, Joe Hewitt, Ken Lloyd, Tony Brown 24; D. Griffiths 10.

Saundersfoot 89

Five Arches 65.25

A Wednesday night meeting with local rivals Saundersfoot is always a tough encounter. After the defeat by Milford, we needed to hit back and gain some points. The match started in some confusion as one of the Five Arches players failed to arrive and the rinks had to be rejigged. The Saundersfoot players showed admirable patience and we finally started.

On rink two, Tony and his rink of John, Joe and Ken were hoping to continue their winning ways from the previous Saturday. They started well and led by eight shots to five after 10 ends. In an evenly-matched game, the loss of two fours on the 17th and 18th ends proved conclusive as the Saundersfoot foursome held on to win by 20 shots to 18.

Harold, well supported by Harry, Tony and Steve, were on top form. They led by 11 shots to 10 at half-time, winning six of the next seven ends, to open up a six-shot lead. The Saundersfoot players hit back, but just fell short and Harold and his boys held on to win by one shot.

With one player missing, we had to play with one triple. It fell to Peter, Ashley and Ben to try and battle it out against Myrddin and his rink. The game started well for the Five Arches triple, picking up a six on the fifth end. However, Saundersfoot hit back and led by 11 shots to nine after 10 ends. In a tightly fought match, the game ebbed and flowed and eventually with the 25 per cent reduction for the Arches playing in a triple, the Saundersfoot quartet prevailed by 20 shots to 17.25.

On rink five, Ray, skipping Mike, Stuart and John, was up against the in-form Joe Dennis. They struggled from the start and trailed 13 shots to six after 10 ends. The Saundersfoot rink piled on the pressure in the second half, pulling away to win by 28 shots to eight.

On the positive side, we picked up another two points, but we need to get back to winning ways if we are to remain in the First Division. Next game is tonight against Castle.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, Saundersfoot skips only) were:

John Rees, Joe Hewitt, Ken Lloyd, Tony Brown 18; B. McKehon 20.

Harry Meades, Tony Powling, Steve Davies, Harold Ebdon 22; S. Dick 21.

Peter Hooper, Ashley Hooper, Ben Simmons 17.25; M. Dennis 20.

Mike Gouldingay, Stuart Askew, John Hubbard, Ray Taylor 8; J. Dennis 28.
