TENBY 81
HAVERFORDWEST 64
Haverfordwest were the visitors to Sutton Street last Saturday. After the excellent win against Whitland last week, this would be another stern test for the Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby side.
Rink one consisted of Luke Rees, Ben Cloake, Peter Day and Andrew Muskett. After 12 ends the Tenby rink were one shot in arrears, having never been in front all match. Andrew and his men then decided to put their foot to the pedal, and raced away into an unassailable lead, including a six count on the way to a massive 16-shot victory.
Rink two were always in control in their contest, but then they shot themselves in the foot by dropping a disastrous six on the 16th end, which let the opposition back into the match. Skip John Roberts had to produce a magical last bowl to earn the rink of Aaron Lloyd, Dai Spencer and Mike Jackson an honourable draw.
Cameron White, John Baggott, Jon Webb and Paul Diment were all in fine form on rink three. The contest was close up until the 17th end, but Paul and his men then scored on all of the final ends to record a valuable six-shot win for the Tenby team.
Neil Dickinson, Pat Currie, Luke and Craig Guymer battled all afternoon against a very talented Haverfordwest rink. The Tenby foursome were all level after 19 ends, but unfortunately dropped a four on the next end, which ended up the difference between the two sides.
A 17-shot victory and a points haul of 11 to three gives captain Jon Webb a very good start to the season, and with the Carruthers campaign starting against Milford tomorrow, the early season signs are looking promising.
Rink scores (Tenby first, Haverfordwest skips only):
Luke Rees, Ben Cloake, Peter Day, Andrew Muskett 27; M. Hughes 11.
Aaron Lloyd, Dai Spencer, Mike Jackson, John Roberts 19; R. Thomas 19.
Cameron White, John Baggott, Jon Webb, Paul Diment 19; C. Jones 13.
Neil Dickinson, Pat Currie, Luke Guymer, Craig Guymer 16; C. Court 21.

Five Arches 65
The Five Arches started their campaign in the First Division with an away trip to Haverfordwest to play Castle. We were hoping for a good start to the new season and with the weather being kind we started in good spirits.
Ashley and his rink of Ken and uncle and nephew combination Tony and Joe struggled out on rink three. Up against a strong Castle rink, they only managed to collect two shots by tea to trail by a massive 20 shots. A more even second half followed, with the Five Arches quartet at least getting into double figures. However, they finished well behind by 34 shots to 10.
Tony playing with Jim, Peter and Stuart had a much closer game. After 10 ends the score was seven shots to five to the Castle foursome. This lead was increased to 14 shots to nine at the 17th end, but then the Five Arches rallied, picking up two 3s and a single to win three out of the remaining four ends to clinch victory by one shot. Special mention must go to Tony's final bowl which moved the jack back to make the three shots required to win.
Clive, Harold, John and Ray were involved in another thriller. They started well on a tricky green and were leading by 14 shots to eight after 10 ends. The game got closer and closer and the Castle team had levelled the game after 19 ends. Reluctant skip Clive then showed true skip qualities by playing telling bowls in the last two ends to gain shots and run out winners by 22 shots to 20.
Finally to complete a trio of tight games, Ray aided and abetted by John, Steve and vice-captain Ben were involved in another tight tussle. Eleven shots to eight down after 10 ends, they couldn't quite get back into the lead, narrowing the gap to one shot on a couple of occasions, but trailed by four going into the last end. Fine bowling by all four let them pick up three shots to fall short by only one.
A very satisfactory start to the season, picking up a couple of rinks away from home in our first game in the First Division was a fine performance. We can now look forward to our first game at home on Sunday against Pendine.
Rink scores (Five Arches first, Castle skips only):
Joe Hewitt, Tony Powling, Ken Lloyd, Ashley Hooper 10; G. Jones 34.
Stuart Askew, Jim Taylor, Peter Hooper, Tony Brown 16; B. Absalom 15.
Ray Hine, John Hubbard, Harold Ebdon, Clive Webb 22; D. Summers 20.
John Rees, Steve Davies, Ben Simmons, Ray Taylor 17; R. Jones 18.
