Tenby visited Haverfordwest last Saturday, the first time the clubs had met for several years as previously the hosts had always been in Division One of the Dyfed League. It rained continuously throughout the day, although the strong wind died down a little towards the end of play. It proved to be another close match, with four of the seven games going all the way to the last hole, as had happened the previous week at home to Ashburnham B. In the top game, Ben Childs and Andrew Cope were always in control and ran out winners by 3 and 1. Second out were youngsters Dan Cope and Lewis Hurlow. One of their opponents was diminutive 12-year-old Abe Forsyth, who, although lacking length, never missed a shot. Cope and Lewis were fortunate to win one up. The biggest winning margin of the day came from Tenby debutant John Bolter and his partner Darren Thomas, who dovetailed well and claimed victory by 7 and 5. Nick Thomas and Gary McNeilly halved their game which could have gone either way. Chris Hughes and Ian Thomas, who won when they were first out last week, both had on off day and succumbed by 6 and 5. The sixth game also ended in defeat, Paul Jenkins and Rob Wilcox being unlucky to lose one down. Thus, with one game still on the course, Tenby led by just a single point. Martin Morris and Neil Thomas were two up at one stage, but their opponents clawed back to level. Thomas then holed a few tricky putts on the closing holes to secure a one-up win. This meant that Tenby claimed their first away win for some time by 4.5 to 2.5 and their second Division Three victory of the season. Although all the players were drenched, they thoroughly enjoyed the Haverfordwest course which was in an excellent overall condition. The hospitality offered by Vernon Harris and his team was good and the post-match meal was excellent. Tenby's next league match is tomorrow (Saturday), at home to Priskilly.
