Tenby United 46 pts. Tumble 10
With a clear target of gaining a bonus point win, and helping coach Gareth Thomas enjoy his 50th birthday, Andrew Price, Molson Coors and FBM Holidays sponsored Tenby United started the game against mid-table Tumble intent on quickly establishing their authority on the game and avoiding a repeat of the previous week's game against Haverfordwest where they squandered many first half opportunities.
Following the modern game start, the usual kicking ping pong phase was prominent, although when an opening appeared, both sides attempted to exploit the opportunity, but defences held firm.
The forceful application in the opening kicking and running duel came out in favour of Tenby, with Aled Bowen, Toby Smith, Lloyd Thomas and Jonathan Rogers all thumping superb touch-finders to send the visitors scampering back deep into their 22.
Sorties involving forwards Henry Boot, Gareth Jones, Sam Smith, Jonny Palmer and Luke Hansford kept Tumble on the alert, with backs Dan Colley, Jack Guerreiro, Damian Miller and half-backs Jonathan Rogers and Lloyd Thomas always up in support to continue the move, and it came as no surprise to see centre Toby Smith glide over wide out for the first five-pointer.
As if guided by magnet, the Tumble kick-off went straight to skipper Chris James who linked with fellow second row Henry Boot and the dangerous Tenby backs were again straight on the attack. The scrambling visitors' defence just about managed to bring the promising attack to a halt and when Jonathan Rogers linked with Chris James to restart the move, the skilful chip over the onrushing Tumble defence by Lloyd Thomas was brought to a halt by a trip on the chasing Thomas. Referee Griffiths was a tad lenient with his interpretation of the offence and Jonathan Rogers stroked over the resultant penalty and Tenby went into a much-deserved 8-0 lead, with about 20 minutes play gone.
Again, straight from the kick-off, Tenby surged up-field following a high up and under and a superb take by Damian Miller maintained the momentum and Tumble were at full stretch to avoid a score when thrusts by Patrick Roberts, skipper James, Henry Boot and Luke Hansford were just about repelled by a determined visitors' defence.
The pressure, however, was rewarded eventually when in the 35th minute a drive for the line involving all the Tenby forwards saw them walk the Tumble pack back fully 25 yards before flanker Luke Hansford deservedly grabbed the touchdown for another five-pointer, to stretch the lead to 13-0.
Not content to rest on their laurels, Tenby ended the half with centre Toby Smith taking a quick tap and go penalty and, following an excellent break by Luke Hansford and Lloyd Thomas, livewire hooker Gareth Thomas was put cleclear for the touchdown.
With Jonathan Rogers adding the extras, the United went into half-time comfortably 20-0 in the lead.
The second half started as the first half finished with Tenby straight into attack mode and, despite a fine tackle by Tumble fullback Rhodri Thomas on his opposite number Aled Bowen, which resulted in a scrum, a strike against the head released the potent Tenby threequarters, who put winger Dan Colley clear for an excellent bonus point corner try, converted by ace kicker Rogers, taking Tenby out to a 27-0 lead.
In addition to dominating the scrum, the Tenby forwards were also using varied lineout options, with good clean ball being won by Henry Boot, Chris James and Luke Hansford, putting the visitors under constant pressure, and it came as no surprise when scrum-half Jonathan Rogers spotted an opening on the blind side and sniped in for a try, which he also converted, taking the score out to 34-0.
Another score quickly followed when Henry Boot took a splendid catch off the top of a lineout, setting the Tenby threes into attack mode and ending with centre Toby Smith skipping along the touchline and cleverly avoiding two would-be tacklers to stroll over and extend the lead to 39-0.
Following some unusual ruling introduced by referee Griffiths, the game entered the comic uncontested scrum stage with 20 minutes still to play and Tenby took time to adjust to this sometimes farcical method of play.
While they were still adjusting, Tumble started to get into the game, getting over the line for a scrambled five-pointer by replacement Gethin Davies, which was quickly followed by a second unconverted try wide out by scrum-half Chris Davies.
The 39-10 score lasted virtually until full-time when the alert Lloyd Thomas took a tap and go on the Tenby line and linked with centre Toby Smith, who in turn put wing Damian Miller in for a 50-yard romp to the line.
With man-of-the-match Jonathan Rogers adding the extras, and taking his contribution for the match to 16 points, the game ended with a well-deserved 46-10 victory for Tenby, maintaining their impressive run of five-pointers and retaining their lead at the top of the division with 25 points, with 'yet to be played' Penclawdd on 23 in second place and 'already beaten' Gorseinon third on 21 points.
Tumble have in previous seasons proved a difficult hurdle to overcome, be it home or away, so a victory, and a five-pointer at that, will be just the tonic needed for players and coaching staff as they get prepared for the tricky trip north to mid-table Cardigan tomorrow (Saturday). Any support would be much appreciated.
Tenby would also like to thank Julian Thomas, of Beachdean Leisure Park, Reynalton, for his match sponsorship and hope he and his guests enjoyed the game and the hospitality down at the club - many thanks.
