A strong wind and scattered rain made scoring difficult during the first leg of the AJO Memorial at Trefloyne Golf Club last Saturday.

At the halfway stage, two local members are leading. Young Richard Cope has had his handicap cut from 18 to 16 thanks to his fine 38 points.

Derek Knifton thought he had the same score before realising that the competition rules stipulate a maximum handicap of 24 for men. Thus his score was adjusted down one to 37 points. Nevertheless his handicap has been reduced from 25 to 24!

On 36 points is a trio comprising Tenby's evergreen John Gillespie, who is playing better than ever now he is in his eighth decade, plus Trefloyne's Glenn Hunter and Simon Arthur.

Young five handicapper Billy Truman is on 35 points, which means he is currently second behind Tenby's Richard Morton who leads the field in the Tenby Observer Cup for 'gross' scores with 32 points.

In the Ladies' Section, last year's winner Amber Thomas, of Tenby, leads with 36 points, followed by her clubmate Helen Hughes with 33 points.

The second leg of the AJO Memorial will take place tomorrow (Saturday) at Tenby Golf Club. There are a few tee times still available and members of both clubs are reminded that they are entitled to enter even if they were unable to play at Trefloyne last week.

The prize-giving and draws will be at Tenby GC commencing around 8 pm. All those in contention are urged to attend. Under competition rules, absentees may have to forfeit their prizes and winnings.
