West Wales Ladies Bowling Association's finals day on Saturday had all the ingredients of an action-packed day.

Spectators were treated to a real feast of bowling as new names were added to the prize-winners list, two bowlers - Ceris Hewlings and Helen Baggott - won a hat-trick of titles and three finals went right to the wire, only being decided on the very last woods of the game.

Two singles matches took centre stage in the morning, alongside the county's newest competition, the two-wood pairs.

In the blue riband four-wood singles, Welsh international Ceris Hewlings, of Saundersfoot, retained the trophy for the third successive year after beating her clubmate and British Isles triples colleague, Ann Lewis, while Helen Baggott, of Tenby Bowling Club, chalked up success against her team-mate Julia King Thomas in the Autumn Cup.

Mother and daughter, Steph and Gemma Amos, of Saundersfoot, clinched the two-wood pairs title, beating Pembroke Dock duo Margaret Lewis and Betty James.

It took Helen Baggott an extra end to win her second trophy of the day. Her game junior international Ysie White, also of Tenby, could not have been closer, with Helen snatching victory on the 22nd end in the two-wood singles.

In the four-wood pairs, Ceris Hewlings teamed up with partner Kath Blayney and went one better than the previous year when they were runners-up, this year beating the two Pam's from Haverfordwest - Smith and Langdon.

But it was the last two games of the day that were the most dramatic and had spectators on the edge of their seats.

In the rinks, the Whitland quartet skipped by Cally Jones, must have thought they had one hand on the trophy when they led Julia King-Thomas's combination by eight shots with only three ends to go.

However, a strong fightback by Lynn Rafferty, Audrey Owens, Helen Baggott and Julia saw them score a five and a three on the 19th and 20th ends, to go into the last end all-square.

And the finish couldn't have been closer, with the match-winning shot being decided on a measure.

There were tears of jubilation and sadness, but one could not help feeling the disappointment for 12-year-old Katie Thomas, appearing in her first county final playing second in the Whitland rink, which also featured her mum Andrea as third and Kathy Jenner as lead.

However, 24 hours later, Katie had plenty to celebrate - this time her selection as reserve for the 2013 Welsh junior international team.

As the drama was unfolding in the rinks on one end of the green, at the other, the triples was also becoming a nail-biting affair.

Saundersfoot trio Gemma Amos, Kath Blayney and Ceris Hewlings were up against Neyland's Pat Young, Janet Sutton and Val Hubbard.

It was a closely-fought contest which saw Neyland have their noses in front right from the start, but the Saundersfoot trio kept hanging in and a strong finish saw them take the lead on the very last end, winning by the narrowest of margins, one shot.

The victory gave Gemma, Kath and Ceris a 100 per cent finals day record, but also saw Ceris win the coveted Victrix Ludorum for the first time.

Many thanks to county competitions secretary Ann Gray for organising the day and to president Jackie and the ladies and gentlemen of Pembroke Dock Bowling Club for hosting the day.

The trophies will be presented at the WWLBA's annual luncheon in October.
