This year's popular captain of Tenby Golf Club, Chris Beecher, has long been a supporter of the mixed competitions in Tenby. Earlier this year he voiced his wish to introduce a shield to celebrate the club reaching its' 125-year anniversary of affiliation; and so Sunday's competition was born. He also suggested a Greensomes foursomes format, but, unusually, a medal; then to make it even tougher, each player had to get seven drives in.

There were many moans when regular competitors heard the word 'medal', but most agreed it had been a very successful format, thoroughly enjoyed, and good golf. Of course, the fine weather also helped.

Fifty-two people went out to have the honour of being the first names on the shield, but 50 were disappointed!

Six twos were recorded. They were: on the 6th - Fair Ball and Allan Morton and Annette and Bob Flower; on the 12th - Idwal David and Sarah Waring and Ruth Goldwait and Steve Maytum; on the 17th - Sue Griffiths and John Hancock and Jim Moffatt and Anne Wilks.

The best gross was carded by Roz and Paul Jenkins with an outstanding 84; but the shield was a nett prize.

In fourth place with 93-21-72 were Ian Thomas and his daughter Amber. Third were Georgina Ormond and her nephew, Lewis Hurlow, with 85-13-72. Pipped into second place on the back nine with 87-16-71 were Chris and Helen Hughes, but first time winners of the shield with the same score were Allan Morton and Fair Ball.

Fair thanked her playing partner, praised the condition of the course and then said she was lost for words.

Five pairs won back their entry fee in the bag draw. They were Gill John and Paul James, Liz Storey and Jeff Banfield, Sophie and Neil Lovatt, Rebecca Naden and Paul Bradley, Diane and Andy Williams.

Big thanks must go to the greens staff, who are working hard to keep up Tenby's world-renowned course; and to Julie, Mo and Matt for looking after us in the clubhouse, and Tom and Ben for their assistance in the Pro Shop. Also thanks to Laura McQueen who helped in the office with the cards.

The last mixed event of the year is the Friendly Fours on Friday, September 13. Tee-off starts from 4 pm and we would like a full house for a sociable end to the season. It is draw for partners, so why not give us a go. Play is off the yellow boxes over 14 holes, so truly sociable. Sign up on the mixed noticeboard in the back hallway.

Finally, the captain thanked Heather Morgan for running the mixed calendar so successfully during his captaincy, and he and his wife, Carol, and former president Mervyn Tucker presented her with a fine bouquet of flowers.

Flowers were also to be presented to Irene Gilman for her hard work during his year, but as she was absent, her husband accepted them on her behalf.
