A decision to participate in the Rotary Young Writer's Competition by the Rotary Club of Tenby proved to be very successful with excellent entries being submitted from both Tenby Junior School in the junior section and from Greenhill School in both the intermediate and senior section.
The Rotary International theme for the Rotary Year 2012 -2013 was 'Peace', and contestants had to write a letter not more than one side of an A4 on the subject of peace to any person alive or dead.
The winning entry in the junior section was submitted by Tenby Junior School pupil Katie Dickinson, and Katie was presented with a certificate and £25 prize money by Rotarian Brian Charles, immediate past president of the Tenby club at the school this week.
In the senior section, the winning entry was submitted by Year 10 pupil Harriet Sleight, and Harriet also went on to greater success, when her entry was selected as the winner for the whole of the South Wales Region of Rotary. Harriet was recently presented with her regional prize by the Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones AM in a special ceremony at the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff.
Harriet was also presented with her local certificate and prize this week at Greenhill School by the president of the Rotary Club of Tenby, Peter Oeppen. Unfortunately, the winner of the intermediate section, Year 9 pupil Rowan Ashdown, was not in school on the day and her prize will be presented at a later date.
Tenby Rotary Club would like to sincerely congratulate all the pupils on their entries and also thank the schools and teachers for their participation and efforts. Thanks are also due to the local adjudicators Mrs. Lindsay Oeppen and Mrs. Nicole Evans for judging all the local entrants.
Due to the success of the competition, the Tenby club is pleased to say that they will be running the young writer competition again in the coming year, and hope to include other local schools, and are also very pleased to say that they will be participating in the Rotary 'Young Photographer' Competition for the first time. Full details of both competitions will be available for the autumn term.
The First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones AM is a former Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar and kindly hosted the presentation ceremony for the Rotary Youth Competitions at the National Assembly building, when all competition winners were presented with their prizes, before they and their accompanying families and teachers were given a guided tour of the impressive Assembly building.
