Four bowlers from South Pembrokeshire have been crowned world champions.

Representing Wales, Penally short mat bowlers, Janine Bancroft, Robert Hughes and twin brothers Craig and Luke Guymer won the World Short Mat Bowls Fours Championship at the weekend.

Defeating the holders, Ireland, in a closely fought final, the quartet, whose ages total just 77, became the first Welsh winners in the history of the competition and the youngest to ever lift the coveted title.

Twenty-four-year-old Janine, Robert, who is 23, and the 15-year-old twins, who are pupils at Tenby's Greenhill School, led throughout the final, but their 9-7 victory was sealed when skip Craig ditched the jack right on top of one of their touchers.

Staged at Carmarthen's Bro Myrddin Stadium, the event attracted competitors not only from England, Scotland and Ireland, but also the Isle of Man, Italy, Belgium and India.

Cheered on by supporters and family, who were are justiably proud of their success, the foursomes win was one of a trio of victories for the home country.

Swansea's Steve Williams took the singles, while there were double celebrations for Pembrokeshire, when Sean Hughes and Andrew Hudson, of Hook, chalked up success in the pairs.
