Whitland winger Andrew Richards scored a hat-trick of tries to help his side overcome the Llanelli Wanderers in the Konica Minolta-sponsored Welsh Cup on Saturday.

On a very heavy pitch, the Borderers took the lead after 10 minutes when fullback Gavin Morris went over for a try, which new fly-half Eifion Roberts converted, with the debut player then going on to score a try himself after good work from Dai Jones and Phil Morgan.

Whitland scored a third try through prop Romeo Collella and soon after Johnny Kaloi added a fourth, with Roberts landing his third conversion in four attempts, to give the Borderers a 24-5 lead at the interval.

The Wanderers' only try on the break came from winger Gareth Spuffard.

Stuart Tyrie gave outstanding Whitland skipper Phil Morgan a deserved rest after the break and Kaloi and centre Lee Glanville continued the try scoring, with Roberts converting both.

Winger Richards then went on to claim his superb hat-trick of tries, before Tyrie completed the scoring with the last touchdown of the match, with Roberts notching up his seventh conversion in nine attempts to claim a personal haul of 19 points.

Whitland were sponsored by Whitland Cricket Club.
