An improved entry of 935 spring lambs forward including 935 lambs and 38 hoggets.

The best meated spring lambs sold to a top of 219ppk and £88/head, with the medium weight lambs averaging 198.33ppk or £81.72/head. The overall market average for the spring lambs was 195.71ppk. Hoggets topped at 157ppk and £72/head whilst selling to an average of 144.37ppk.

Non-approved lambs sold to a top of £40/head and 119p/kg.

An entry of 211 ewes and rams was seen selling to a good trade throughout with the greatest demand being for the heavier type ewes, which averaged £62, while the lighter ewes and rams averaged £18 and £68 respectively. Ewes peaked at £112.50 for a Suffolk from Saer, Rhosgoch and the leading bid on rams was £89.50 for Jones, Trenichol.

Two Limousin steers from Merriman, Lower Coachlands Farm, both weighing 730 kilos sold at 157.50ppk and 149.50ppk and to a head of £1,149 and £1,091, while a small entry of barren cows averaged of 113.68ppk or £716/head - a good average due to the fact that all cows forward were dairy bred.

In the calf ring, bulls sold to a top price of £272 for a Limousin from Evans, Waterholmes Farm, and heifers peaked at £210 for a Limousin from Harts, Lanes End Farm.

Special sale

At last week's monthly Wednesday evening sale of cattle at Whitland Mart, for farmers who are subject to livestock movement restrictions, there was a smaller entry of just 54 cattle in comparison to previous sales.

Forward were 41 cull cows, two cull bulls, seven overage steers and heifers and four underage cattle - again the best fleshed cows sold to a premium peaking at 124ppk and £1,005/head for a 660 kilo Limousin from John, Pensarn.

Bulls sold to a top price p/kg of 115p for a 640 kilo Holstein Friesian from Gibbon, Parc-Y-Berllan.

Seven overage steers peaked at 144p (£945) for a 655 kilo Limousin from Owen, Canerw, and heifers achieved at 132p for a 510 kilo Simmental from Davies, Mount Pleasant.

A small entry of fat cattle was seen selling to a top of 143.50p (£904) for a 630 kilo Belgian Blue heifer from Griffiths, Penlan.
