Tenby’s 80th anniversary VE Day celebrations yesterday evening, culminated in a beacon lighting ceremony on Castle Hill, proceeded by a military convoy and parade through the Walled Town.

The beacon lighting took place under the Prince Albert memorial at 9.30 pm, with the Proclamation being read in front of a large gathering.

The parade to the ceremony started at 9 pm, forming up outside St Mary’s Church, before making its way through Tudor Square.

Piper Graham Phillips led the way, before the community singing of ‘I Vow to Thee My Country’.

At 9.25 pm, The Town Crier Erin Morgan read the VE Day Tribute at Castle Hill, before local War Veteran Duncan Hilling assisted Mayor, Cllr Dai Morgan in lighting the beacon to form part of a national chain.

This was followed by the singing of the National Anthems.

Throughout Thursday, May 8, the seaside town paid its respects to commemorate the historic 80th anniversary.

Proceedings in Tenby started in the morning, when the proclamation by the Town Crier was read on the historic town walls, and the VE Day flag raised on the turret.

The wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial on South Parade then took place at 11 am, led by Rev Steven Brett.

Mayor, Cllr Dai Morgan laid a wreath on behalf of the town and a large crowd witnessed other organisations pay respects which included - Tenby Branch of the Royal British Legion, local policing team, Tenby Sea Cadets, Ysgol Greenhill students.

Afterwards the Mayor signed along with Major Andrew Hamilton the Armed Forces Covenant - a promise made by the council to ensure that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

Continuing the programme of events for the day, organised by the Town Council, alongside the local branch of the Royal British Legion - at 6.30 pm, the Peal of Bells from St Mary’s Church took place to coincide with a national peal.
