BBC Cymru Wales TV cameras have been giving added interest to Tenby Bowling Club's Open Week.

A crew has been filming competitors in the 87th prestigious Gold Cup and Percy Howells Silver Bowl tournaments for the Tenby 24/7 programme to be shown in the autumn.

The tournament is one of the highlights of the town's sporting calendar and rightly so it should feature in the series about the resort.

Since Sunday, over 100 bowlers from all over Wales and beyond have been doing battle on the Sutton Street green for two of the most-sought after titles in Welsh bowls.

Defending Gold Cup champion, Andrew Hopkins, of Resolven, and Silver Bowl holder, Phil Carpenter, a member of Tenby's 2009 Carruthers winning team, who now bowls nearer his home at Aberdare Harlequins, have eased through the opening rounds and have their sights on retaining their trophies. However, they have a strong field of international opponents and previous winners.

Phil maintains an interest in both competitions as does five times gold winner David Kingdon, of Llanelli, and previous 'double trophy' winner, Paul Diment, of Tenby. In the gold cup, three times winner Lee Williamson, who hails from Tenby, who now bowls in Cheltenham, is hoping to chalk up success again, while last Tenby teenager standing is young Aaron Lloyd who was due to play Phil Carpenter yesterday (Thursday).

Bidding for silver glory are local hopes 2005 winner John Roberts, of Tenby BC, his clubmate, our own editor, Neil Dickinson, who earned himself a place in the third round with a dramatic 21-20 win against Gavin Fielding, of Pontyclun, and Steve Reese, of Whitland BC.

Play was also beginning yesterday (Thursday) in the Five Arches Bowl for players eliminated of the two main competitions in the early rounds.

Sponsored by Carlsberg/Tetley, the tournament carries a total prize money of £2,090.

Tournament organiser Lynn Delabertouche has been maintaining a tight playing schedule which comes to an end tomorrow (Saturday), with the semi-finals in the morning and finals in the afternoon.
