The opening took place on Friday of a new Child, Adolescent and Family Consultation Service unit named Preseli Unit (Canolfan Preseli) which is situated at Withybush General Hospital, Haverfordwest.

Over 40 people attended the afternoon's ceremony, including members of the Trust Board.

Mrs. Lynette George, chairman, thanked everyone for coming along and was delighted to welcome Fiona Phillips, the TV presenter, to formally open the unit.

Fiona was especially pleased to be invited back to Withybush and apologised to everyone for keeping them waiting as she had been involved in a lengthy traffic jam on the M4.

She cut the ribbons and then released a large number of helium balloons. She named the unit and was then presented with a pretty bouquet of flowers.

Fiona took time to meet all the staff and was given a tour of the brightly decorated rooms.

The present development reflects a commitment by the Pembrokeshire and Derwen NHS Trust, the Health Authority and the National Assembly to the mental health needs of children, young people and their families. The focus of the strategy is to develop a partnership working around the emotional health and well-being of all children, calling on agencies to breakdown boundaries and plan together.

It is double the size of the previous unit, so it has been possible to provide for additional work with other agencies within the new building.

The staff includes a social worker as well as a fully developed multi-displinary team of psychiatry, psychology, community mental health nurse and primary health co-ordinator.

There is a commitment to all children with emotional distress and mental health problems which are met in a variety of ways. A lot of work is carried out through consultation and liaison with people like GPs, teachers, social workers and voluntary bodies.
