Over 70 competitors recently took part in the first Pembrokeshire Junior Triathlon at Fishguard Leisure Centre. The event, which was organised by the Pembrokeshire Triathlon Club and sponsored by Chicago Bridge and Iron (CB& I) of South Hook LNG, not only attracted some of the best young triathletes from across Wales, but also afforded the opportunity for a number of local youngsters to take part in the sport of triathlon for the first time. On the day, the Pembrokeshire Tristars were given a great start, with Finnlay Thompson beating off some strong competition from David Clarke of the local 'Fishguard Flyers', to register his first win of the season in the boys eight-year-old category, with Liam Fitzpatrick-Smith taking third place. More success soon followed for the Pembrokeshire Tristars, with Sophie Rees and Alicia Jones, both competing in their first triathlon, taking first and second places, respectively, in the eight-year-old girls category. In the nine to 10 years category, Samuel Withers took second place in the boys' event, with Caitlin Thompson following on from the success of her brother to take second from Lucy Buck in the girls' race. In the 11-12-year-old category, Clair Fitzpatrick- Smith took third place in the female section. In the boys 11-12 category, Pembrokeshire Tristar Joe Lloyd put in a determined performance, but despite 'battling' all the way to the line, lost out for third place by less than one second. In the 13-14 year old category, the Pembrokeshire Tristars dominated, with Alex Matchett, Jake Watson, Luke Cornish and Chris Turner taking first, second, third and fourth place, respectively. In the girls 13-14 years, Jess Fitzpatrick-Smith 'clocked up' the third success of the day for the Fitzpatrick-Smith family by taking second place. The final event of the day saw Luke Watson, of the Pembrokeshire Tristars, put in a strong performance to beat off competition from Pencoed and Cardiff triathlon clubs to take first place in the youth category. The day concluded with each competitor being presented with a medal and a t-shirt to mark their individual achievement. In addition to the main sponsorship from Chicago Bridge and Iron (CB& I) of South Hook LNG, the event also received additional support from Prince's Gate Water and the Co-Op in Kilgetty. Pembrokeshire Tristars, established just over a year ago, has over 70 members and holds training sessions every Friday evening at 5.30 on the running track of Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest. If you are a budding tristar, you will be made very welcome at the training session.
