Seniors v
Milford Haven
The Seniors' first match of 2009 was a home game against Milford Haven GC, on Thursday, March 26. Early weather signs did not look too promising. However, by tee-off time, the sun was beginning to appear, but the wind was still strong. Having two starting tees made things move quickly.
First off for Trefloyne were Graham Harrison (captain) and Bob Burks, the opponents, Brian and Norman. The Milford pair won the first with a par, Graham retaliated on the second with a birdie. These exchanges continued, neither pair making a breakthrough. All-square going into the 18th, the Trefloyne duo kept their nerve and clinched a narrow victory, one up.
Next off were Peter Scrivens and Bob Simpson, against George and Gareth. Once again the game swayed one way and then t'other. Eventually the experienced Milford pair ran out winners 2 and 1.
Third off were Darrell Jones and Richard Davies, enjoying the luxury of a buggy! Their opponents, Gordon and John, had to run to keep up with them. Darrell won the first with a fine long putt for his par, but had to settle for a half on each of the next four holes. Wins on the sixth and eighth gave the Trefloyne pair a three-hole lead at the turn. A lost ball on the 10th cost them the hole, a half on the 11th, then a fine chip on the 12th restored the three-hole advantage. Another half at the Quarry was followed by a Milford win on the 14th, much to the disbelief of Darrell and Richard! Even with three putts on the 15th, Darrell still won the hole, making it dormie three into the 16th. A half here was enough to give them a 3 and 2 victory.
Pairing number four were Terry Harvey and Glyn Jones, taking on Owen and Bill. After three holes it was all-square, a nice friendly game. Finally, Glyn broke the sequence with some fine shots on the par five fourth. Another half was followed by a Milford win, all-square again. Using the tailwind down the seventh, Glyn and Terry took the lead once more. A "lovely putt" was Terry's comment for a half on the eighth. One up at the turn, Glyn showed excellent form to win the 10th. Milford clawed one back on the 12th, only to lose three on the trot to go down 5 and 3. Well played Glyn and Terry.
Last off the first tee were Trevor Lewis and Phil Rees, playing against Roy and Jim. Trevor and Phil were in control from the start, ending with a 5 and 3 win. The highlight was Trevor winning the nearest the pin competition on the 12th, also scoring a two.
Meanwhile, on the 10th tee, play commenced with Roger Cryer and Steve Jones taking on Bert and Jack. By the 14th, Steve and Roger were one down, having lost to a six on the par four, 13th! The next four holes were evenly shared, a half on the 18th made it all-square at the turn. A similar pattern followed until the 16th and 17th, both won by Trefloyne. A half on the eighth gave Steve and Roger a 2 and 1 win.
Next away were Pat Casement and Zak Zeraschi, playing against Don and Garry. All-square after three holes, the game seemed to be set for a close contest. However, Pat and Zak went up a gear and won the next for holes, Pat having a birdie on the 15th. Don and Garry started to recover, taking the 17th, but it was short-lived. After a half on the 18th and first, Pat and Zak romped away, taking three on the trot for a 7 and 5 victory. Pat also birdied the second - is he heading for a single figure handicap?
Third off were John James and Dennis Busby, taking on Allan and Bill. John's second shot on the 10th disappeared over the hedge, leaving Dennis to fly the flag. Unfortunately, Allan sank a 15-foot putt for his par to win the hole. He repeated this on the 11th; John's comment was "are you going to putt like that on every hole."
A par by John on the 12th started a fight back; this was followed by another win on the Quarry, both Dennis and Allan went out-of-bounds, Keeping well away from the quarry! With Bill striking Dennis's ball on the 14th, it gave a third hole to Trefloyne. A half on the 15th was followed by a par on the 16th for Dennis, after a superb chip from well off the green to a 'gimme'. Bill and Allan showed they were still in contention with wins on the 17th and 18th, making it all-square at the turn. The back nine started well for John and Dennis and, with shots at both holes, they took advantage to go two-up. After two shared holes, the fifth was won with a six, poor putting by the Milford pair. Another half made it dormie three for the Trefloyne pair. A 10-foot putt from John on the seventh for his par gave Trefloyne a 4 and 2 victory. Incidentally, John's drive from the fifth tee was lofted, but not seen. It was finally spotted by Pat Casement on the sixth green!
Last away were Terry Morgan and Derek Jones, against Geff and Peter. Another see-saw game, decided on the last hole in favour of Terry and Derek. Terry showed some of his old form with birdies on the fifth, seventh and ninth. Geff chipped in with a birdie on the 14th.
A convincing 8 and 1 victory for Trefloyne, a fine start to the season.
The teams showed their appreciation for an excellent meal provided by Arno and Helen. Thanks, too, to the ground staff for the fine condition of the course.
The next match is on April 2 against Carmarthen G.C. against at Trefloyne.
