The Greg Norman Medal held on May 19 attracted a good field despite the weather conditions which were very testing. Garry Heesom took first place with a net 70, with joint runners-up being Bill Myers and Mike Harris, both on 71. In the ladies' section, Gwyneth Jewitt came in first with a net 70, followed by Ceryn Harris on 73. The Whitewell Mixed Pairs competition due to have been held on Sunday was postponed due to the awful weather conditions. A new date will be decided shortly and notices posted in the club. In the Dyfed League, the match versus South Pembs at home, which took place on May 20, in fine conditions, was led by Simon Arthur as captain in the absence of club captain Meurig Evans, in Ireland, and Trefloyne won seven to nil. The match versus Aberystwyth, held away on Saturday and led by club captain Meurig Evans, was lost six and a half to one half. Bring back Simon Arthur!

Ladies' Section

May began with a bang for lady captain Olive Maher when she strolled in on the first stableford of the month with 38 points, and Liz Crockford took second place with 34 points. On May 5, Linda Kromrei won the medal with an excellent 70, followed once again by the consistent Liz Crockford with 77. Linda certainly has enjoyed a run of wins in May and played the medal round on the 8th all by herself, winning with a net 84, while Olive Maher won the concurrently run 12-hole stableford with 21 points. It was the turn of that lady Gwyneth Jewitt again on the 12th, keeping up her excellent winning record with a stableford score of 29 points, followed by Chris Lewis, who has got a taste for the winning podium now! Gwyneth also won the very coveted Greg Norman Medal on the following Saturday with a terrific net 70 in horrid blustery conditions, while Ceryn Harries came second with a creditable 73. The ladies' section decided to play a Jubilee three on May 22 and Linda Kromrei, joined by Julie Jenkins and Sue Ash, made a great start to the Jubilee season with a well earned 75 points. Linda continued to score well in the club stableford on Satrurday, winning with another steady 37 points. As the culmination to this month's golf, Trefloyne played host to the prestigious West Wales Ladies Golf Association Singles Championship and Presidents Cup on Friday. The day dawned bright and sunny and was absolutely perfect for golf, revealing the course in immaculate condition, fit for the invasion of 58 lady golfers of the highest calibre from all over West Wales. As the first of the ladies teed-off under the eagle eyes of starter Colin Jenkins and ball spotter Eamon Maher, you just knew that some excellent scores were on the cards. With Vicki Thomas amongst the competitors, the contenders for the best gross in this 27-hole competition had a hard fight on their hands and Vicki's experience proved too much for them all as she won by one stroke from Pembrokeshire's own Becky Harries, with scores of 114 and 115, respectively, and Sophie Rees came third with 128. Trefloyne was so proud of its most consistent players who took first and second places in the best net positions, with club champion Michelle Richards winning on 106.5 and Sue Shooter, who played such a steady and exemplary round, with 107 (and she had not even intended to play 27 holes, but was bullied into it after her fine 18-hole round of 71!) It was the turn of the two visiting Mary's in the 18- hole competition run alongside the championship, with Mary Christopher winning the best gross with 86 and Mary Mountney winning the best net with 71. All in all, it was a lovely day and the ladies of Pontardawe club, who are organising all the events this year, were most envious of the wonderful course, facilities and food that Trefloyne so effortlessly produced once again, putting it clearly on the West Wales Championship golfing map! We must not forget the little army of helpers who sat patiently at various points throughout the course and deftly helped those players who had not quite found the fairway every time! Their help was very much appreciated, as was that of the cheerful and ever-smiling staff in the clubhouse, who pleasantly met every request from some very tired ladies with a soothing and efficient service. We look forward to holding many more such events at this fine venue in the future. Forthcoming Events
