The Pembrokeshire Seniors League Invitation Day 2006 was held at Trefloyne Golf Club recently. Nearly all the league teams sent players to enter, with the final total being 102 players. Trefloyne Seniors captain Graham Harrison had his prayer mat out the day before as it was raining; he was hoping to be blessed with some good weather. When he arrived at Trefloyne at 6.45 am on the day, it looked like his prayers had been answered as the sun was shining. The first team of three to tee-off were David Davis, Fred Jones and John Brown, all from South Pembs. Golf Club. Graham welcomed them all to Trefloyne and wished them well and sent them on their way at 0800 hours. As players arrived for their tee-off times, everyone was made welcome, and with the welcome help from John Bancroft on the PA system, all players were introduced and sent on their merry way. The captain had positioned a member of Trefloyne near the trees on the first fairway, to save players time looking for their ball, as they nearly always finished up in the trees. After about 45 minutes, Giles Smith, who had been the first lookout, came back to say he was being attacked by horse flies, so Graham took over and put on his fly spray. All players were sent off expertly on their tee times (great job John). Play was a bit slow as when players reached the seventh green there were two teams sitting on the bench waiting to play. Someone in front must have stopped for tea or lost their ball. After that, play got going and things went smoothly. As players returned, all cards were handed in. Some players must have had a bad game and these weren't handed in. Cards were duly collated and put on the board. When all teams eventually arrived back, all said they had had a fantastic day at Trefloyne Golf Glub. After Bernard and his crew had worked hard on checking all the scorecards (only disqualifying about two), the final results were made. The Seniors' captain, Graham Harrison, announced the results and the prizes were then presented, which were: Twos: P. Griffiths (Trefloyne); K. Dewhurt (S.Pembs); M. Beeley (Trefloyne). Each received a voucher for £30. Nearest pin: R. Graham (Milford Haven) - 0.63m. He received two bottles of wine and a sleeve balls. Longest drive: Terry Morgan (Trefloyne). He also received tgwo bottles of wine and a sleeve balls. Terry hits the ball longer than some people go on holiday, ha ha! Team shield (best three team scores): Barry Wood, Terry Harvey and Gary Hopkins from Trefloyne Golf Club with a total of 95 points. Each received two bottles of wine plus a sleeve of balls. Barry look after that shield. Best scores: There were six prizes - 1. Graham Harrison (Seniors captain, Trefloyne) 42 pts; 2. John Smith (Trefloyne) 38; 3. Terry Harvey (Trefloyne) 37; 4. Dereck Jones (Trefloyne) 35; 5. Morgan James (Haverfordwest) 35; 6. Mel Beeley (Trefloyne) 35. There were two more with 35 points, John James (Trefloyne) and John Hancock (Tenby). Both received a sleeve of balls, but lost on count back. Each of the six players received a voucher, bottle of wine and sleeve of balls. Graham also received a silver salver. After the prize-giving, Graham welcomed all players to Trefloyne Golf Club and thanked them for taking part. This was the first time that Trefloyne had hosted the event, and Graham thanked everyone for the marvellous turnout. He hoped that whichever Golf Club hosts the next event, that everyone would give the same support to them as they had given to him and Trefloyne Golf Club. He added that maybe next time players from all the league could participate, as this is one way of everyone getting together and having a great day. Graham hoped that everyone had had a good game and enjoyed the course and Trefloyne's facilities. He then went on to say a few 'thank yous'. Firstly to their hosts, The Beynons, for allowing them to hold the event at Trefloyne Golf Club and for giving the courtesy of the course - many thanks Joan and Kim. Next a thank you to Sarah, Tom and staff for the food etc. provided. Thanks also went to Graham Blum and staff for the course, which he hoped all would agree was in excellent condition, with a special thank you to Christine, the club professional, for all her help in making this a great day. Special thanks were also given to Bernard Bradley, Giles Smith, Trevor Lewis and, of course, John Bancroft and anyone else who had participated to make a memorable day, and to Brian Norman, who made a fantastic job of the raffle - in which Tenby Golf Club took most of the prizes! Graham ended by thanking all those players who had stayed behind for the presentation and for making his day a great day.
