Local councillors who recently called for a survey of Tenby's historic town walls to be carried out, amid growing concerns over their condition, have again stressed the need for the matter to be discussed urgently at a regeneration meeting.
It was revealed at a previous meeting of Tenby Town Council that it had been over 22 years since a survey was carried out on the historic town walls, following a request by Clr. Lawrence Blackhall to CADW and Pembrokeshire County Council for a copy of the most recent survey.
This promoted the town clerk, Mr. Andrew Davies, to contact Melissa Howells from the county council's regeneration unit, who had said that a photographic survey of the walls had been done in 1993, but she was not aware of any structural survey being carried out in the last 22 years.
"CADW confirmed that no structural survey had been done and there isn't much past 1980 in the archives," Mr. Davies told members on Tuesday night.
"We can't leave this any longer, we need to address a strong letter to the county council and CADW for progress on this, as structural repairs are needed," said Mayor. Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane.
"The walls have been part of this town for hundreds of years and they should be very carefully looked after," Clr. Will Rossiter concurred.
Mayor, Mrs. Lane also said that she would like the proposal of the walls being illuminated at night also looked into again.
"We were told that we couldn't do this before as there might be one bat in one part of the wall, which beggars belief! Nearly every church and cathedral in the land is lit up, so I'm sure if it was looked into, lighting it from the ground up, then this could be achieved.
"It would be such an asset to the town," she added, although Clr. Mrs. Trisha Putwain said she wouldn't back a proposal to illuminate the walls.
"I prefer to look at the stars at night and the town walls in the day time," she remarked.
Councillors called for the matter to be discussed at a regeneration meeting that they wanted pushed through urgently to be held with the county council and CADW.
"The condition of the town walls is our number one priority going into this regeneration meeting," added Clr. Mrs. Lane.
