Help is at hand for smokers in Tenby wanting to quit the habit, as Dyfed Powys Health Authority launches a new smoking cessation service in the area.

Smokers can choose between one-to-one support from counsellors or group sessions, where advice and experience can be swapped, knowing that there is professional help to guide them.

Jemma Edmunds, smoking cessation co-ordinator for Dyfed Powys Health Authority, said: "More than 150 people who have enrolled on the existing smoking cessation services in Pembrokeshire have attempted to quit, so we are confident that the Tenby service will be greatly welcomed.

"There are lots of health benefits in giving up smoking immediately; people will be able to breathe more easily in the first few weeks and the benefits will increase as the period of no smoking continues."

More than 7,000 people in Wales die as a result of smoking, but only three per cent of those trying to give up of their own accord succeed. The chances of giving up increases to 20 per cent if people take part in counselling.

Those in Tenby who want to try counselling should 'phone Noleen Evans on 07980 308503 to make an appointment. Other smoking cessation services are available in Pembroke Dock, Milford Haven and Haverfordwest.
