Sports fans in and around the Narberth area will soon have a chance to talk about and watch sports every Sunday morning, if a new sports club gets off the ground. Eric Bates, of Templeton, a well known Pembrokeshire sports follower is planning to kickstart 'The Sunday Sporting Club of Narberth'. In explaining his idea to Observer Sport, he said: "I have had this idea for some time and after talking to some other sports enthusiasts we have decided to call a meeting on Sunday, September 2, at Narberth Rugby Club, commencing at 11 am. "The idea of the club would be to meet on a Sunday morning between 11 am and 1 pm to talk about and view sport with sporting friends. "All sporting enthusiasts from around Narberth would be welcome to attend to talk about sport or watch videos of Narberth sporting games or tournaments or watch special sporting events on the large screen at the clubhouse. "We have been in touch with sporting organisations in the area such as the Canoe Club, Cricket Club, Darts League, Dragon Rifle Club, Football Club, Kick Boxing Club, Pool League, Rugby Club and the Swimming Club. "We had hoped to attract 10 to 20 people at the first meeting, but current indications are that there will be more like 40 to 50 people in attendance. If everyone agrees, we will form a small committee to organise the club, with the emphasis on enjoyment and an informal atmosphere. "If the idea takes off, we could arrange trips to sporting events such as the Grand National, rugby internationals, major cricket and football matches, boxing tournaments and possibly arrange a tour overseas. "In addition, for say half-an-hour every Sunday morning, we could have talks by sporting personalities, a sports quiz, a general knowledge quiz, or talks by referees, umpires, judges and so on." With tongue in cheek, he added: "Without sport we would have nothing to talk about on Sunday mornings! If sports enthusiasts know that a group of like-minded people will be meeting informally every Sunday morning at Narberth Rugby Club, they may like to come along and join in the fun."
