A scheme operating in Australia and Canada to help reduce traffic problems outside schools could be the answer to Tenby's difficulties. Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane told her colleagues at Tuesday night's meeting of the town council that she had recently been informed by Tenby Junior School teacher, Mr. Andrew Williams, that the three schools situated in Heywood Lane had set up committees to try and come up with solutions to alleviate the traffic congestion along the road. While on holiday in Australia, Clr. Mrs. Lane became aware of the 'school zone programme' which saw speed restrictions introduced in areas during certain times of school hours. "I think the scheme would help deter traffic that didn't need to travel through Heywood Lane at certain times during the day, and if it was successful, it could be something implemented across the whole of the county and Wales, as I'm sure Tenby is not the only place to experience such a problem," said Clr. Mrs. Lane. "I have presented the idea at a school governors meeting, and Mr. Williams was pleased with the suggestion. If it can work in other countries, why can't it work here?" she added. Councillors agreed to run the idea past Pembrokeshire County Council and also to write to their communities and voluntary sector member, Clr. Peter Stock, as well as local AM, Christine Gwyther.
