The Tenby side has only been beaten in one league game this season, away at Crymych. With the two senior sides at home, Greenhill kindly allowed them to play on their main school pitch.
Crymych played with the slope and wind advantage in the first half. They put Tenby under pressure from the kick-off and were awarded a penalty after five minutes, which they easily converted.
Tenby tried to play open expansive rugby, whereas the main strength in the Crymych side was in their strong and fearless tackling.
On a number of occasions, Alex Watt, being tried out at fly-half, attempted to get his line of Jason Keights and Mathew Davies moving, but the tackles were hard and on too many occasions Crymych were stealing the ball in the contact.
Some excellent defensive tackling by the Tenby backs kept them from scoring, but eventually the Crymych wing crossed the line for a well-taken try just on the half-time whistle, which they converted.
Tenby, 10 points down at the interval, earned themselves a stern rallying torrent from coach Lynn. Some changes were made, with captain Johnny leaving the field, still suffering from a recent bout of flu. Laurence Britt, who has already proved himself in the front row, ably took the prop position, Craig Magee moved into the second row and Andrew John came on to take wing position.
The second half started in exactly the same way as the first, with Tenby putting Crymych under immediate pressure, gaining a penalty and Aled stepping up to convert.
Tenby forwards worked exceptionally hard; in particular there were some excellent runs from Sam Smith, John Sheasby and Geoff Martin. Tom James's workrate was impressive and he has fitted in well to his new flanker position. Tom and Alex Jenkins provided excellent line-out ball.
Tenby crossed the line on a couple of occasions, losing the ball before touching down or being held up. The Tenby side also gave away a lot of penalties when in scoring positions.
Pressure eventually paid off when Sam Smith again powered his way over, this time getting the touchdown. Aled converted, putting the scores level with 10 minutes to go.
Tenby came right back into the game, this time John Sheasby using all his power and strength to cross for a try within two minutes of Sam's. Aled added the extra points with the conversion.
Crymych were now under a lot of pressure, but Tenby gave away a number of penalties. It was following one of these that Crymych caught Tenby napping, when they moved the ball wide and scored an excellent try which, luckily for Tenby, they failed to convert.
Tenby have now beaten every side in their league.
Griffiths Cup and Pembrokeshire Cup dates are still to be arranged. Why not go along and support the boys.
They are still looking to recruit players who are over 16 years of age. Go along to the Clicketts on a Wednesday night at 7 pm. The side will be strengthened very shortly by players moving up from junior rugby, in particular Rhys Thomas and Paul Woods - two very exciting young players who will be joining at the end of the month. Both are a credit to the junior system and coaching team at Tenby United.
