Narberth 12 pts. Tenby Youth 13
Continuing what is becoming their customary start, Tenby United rapidly got underway with a scoring burst, going in front in the first five minutes at the Lewis-Lloyd ground against Youth Cup finalists and league high-fliers, Narberth. Young fly-half Toby Smith kicked the ball deep into the Narberth 22 from a penalty awarded for slowing the ball down at the breakdown, and from the resulting lineout, the Tenby eight secured the throw-in and drove Yannick Parker over the try line for a well deserved early lead before the home side had got into their stride. Not to be outdone by this early score, Narberth used the wind and recovered well and very quickly took the lead with a well-executed converted try by Tom Richards. This score was in turn responded to by the young Tenby outfit with a flowing move that saw backs and forwards combine with Lloyd Thomas, Simon Stanford and skipper Pikey creating an opportunity for second row Yannick Parker to grab his, and Tenby's, second try of the afternoon to take the scores out to 10-7 in favour of the visitors. Despite losing advantage of the following wind at the turn around, the Narberth number 10 used some well-judged and flighted kicks to get his side into attacking positions and good following up by the wing, chasing down one of these kicks, was rewarded with a try and Narberth snatched the lead back with a cracking try from winger Gwynfor Llewellyn, and were starting to gain the ascendancy as they entered the final quarter of the match. To their credit, the Tenby XV dug deep into their reserves, with replacement Luke Dedman, joined by fellow forwards Pikey and Joe Lewis, along with backs Tom Hartland and Andrew Stretton, leading by example with the amount of covering and tackling they put in, as well threatening the home defence with their straight running. Their valiant efforts were rewarded when they secured a penalty way out wide, but the distance and angle did not bother fly-half Toby Smith as he coolly slotted the kick between the uprights to give Tenby a narrow 13-12 lead as they went into the final few minutes. Try as they might, Narberth could not create any further scoring opportunities and Tenby ran out deserved winners against a good Narberth side who probably had one eye on the Cup Final against Whitland at Heywood Lane tonight (Friday), kick-off at 7.15 pm. The young Seasiders can take great credit from their last four matches and undoubtedly this is a good side that is going through the conventional 'growing and development' curve one associates with a young or new combination. The boys would also like to thank coaches Gareth Thomas and Chrisy 'Blue' Evans who, in addition to their efforts on the training paddock, entertained the boys well into the night last Saturday. Tenby side: Lloyd Thomas, Tom Hartland, Andrew Stretton, Ben Griffiths, Simon Stanford, Toby Smith, Jamie Robbins, Roy Osborne, Joe Morris, Henry Boot, Yannick Parker, Pikey, Joe Lewis, S. Baker, S. Davidson. Subs - Luke Dedman, K. Morris and Ed.
