The April meeting of the Tenby Visually Impaired People Group was held at the Avenue, Centre, Tenby, on Tuesday. Chairman, John Webb, welcomed members and the roll call revealed 20 members present.

Speaker for the afternoon was one of the group's members, Mavis Owen MBE. Mavis told everyone that she had been born in Tenby where she had also received an excellent education at the old Greenhill Grammar School.

At an early age she had decided to train as a nurse, and she went to London during the war to commence her nursing career at the London Hospital. Having eventually qualified as a midwife, she returned to Pembrokeshire and spent many years working in the county as a District Nurse - regrettably she had not kept count of the number of babies she had delivered.

On her retirement some 25 years ago, she set up Friends of the Community and was awarded the MBE for her work in this connection. She was delighted to report that Friends of the Community was still going strong, and the equipment they lend out can cost anything from £10 to £3,000.

Mavis showed everyone her various nursing medals and, of course, her MBE which she had received from the Queen.

She was warmly thanked by project worker, Tom Forgaard.

The Inner Wheel ladies served welcome refreshments, and this month's raffle winners were Iris Roblin, Geof Eason and Margaret Walker.

To finish the afternoon, everyone joined in two quizzes, one on celebrities from the past and the other on sport.

The PBS minibus and Saundersfoot Rotary Club then took everyone home, having all enjoyed a most interesting afternoon.

The next meeting is on Tuesday, May 19, and if any visually impaired person is interested in joining the group, please contact Margaret Walker on 843464.
