Sir, I hope you will allow us to clarify the position of Tenby United in relation to this weekend's Veterans Tournament. We met the organisers over three months ago and fully supported the event, on the condition that the WRU approved it. We applied, on behalf of the organisers, to the WRU for permission. As it was refused, on various grounds, we advised the organisers to change their application, which they did. We then reapplied, but it was again turned down. This meant that the players would not have the benefit of the WRU insurance cover and neither would WRU qualified referees be able to officiate as they would not be insured. What defence is there in court if there's an unqualified referee at a scrum when a poor engagement is the cause of a serious neck injury. In an age of litigation, Tenby United is not prepared to risk either the club's assets or those of individual members or committee. We regret the decision of the WRU, but we have to abide by their decision. We have been advised to distance ourselves from the event and this is why we cannot support it in any way, such as providing pitches or catering facilities at the ground. The organisers of last year's Vets Festival were under the impression that the WRU had given permission. The WRU confirmed that no request to stage the event had been made. That is why Tenby United got involved this year from the outset and processed both applications in conjunction with the organisers. We have advised the organisers, should they wish to stage it next year, to meet with the WRU before putting in their application. If permission is obtained then Tenby United will give its full support.
