After a comfortable but lacklustre victory over an inexperienced Llangwm team at the end of January, Tenby Under 9s looked to return to form when they welcomed Pembroke to Heywood Lane on Sunday morning.

This was the third time that the teams had clashed this season, the Seasiders having run out comfortable winners in both previous encounters. But it was clear from the kick-off and the large number of supporters that had made their way to Tenby, that the visitors were confident of revenge.

Pembroke showed much more physical presence than when the teams had last met and showed great commitment throughout. Captain for the day Jake Vickery knew that his team would have to work hard to carve out a victory.

It took some time to break the deadlock, but eventually Dan Fairlie cut loose on a mazy run that saw him out-sprint the cover defence to the touchdown. His score was shortly followed by a great score by the improving Ryan Absalom, who had his best game yet for the Seasiders, always in the thick of things and looking to secure possession.

Any ideas that the Tenby youngsters had of a runaway win were soon dispelled as Pembroke used good mauling technique to rumble across the line for a well deserved try. This left the half-time score at 2-1 to the home side.

After the break, the Seasiders knew that they would have to dig deep to maintain their unbeaten record for the season. They started the second period strongly, Corey Morris making a strong touchline run and putting in some important tackles. Jack Murphy came into the game more and more using his strength, but was ably marked by the visiting defences.

Jake Vickery led by example, scoring the home side's third try and putting just a little daylight between the sides. But the Scarlets were soon back on the attack and scored a well-worked try to narrow the gap once again.

The remaining minutes were nervy ones, as the visitors clearly believed that they could come away with a victory. There was some great covering defence from Rhidian Lawrence, who was clearly relishing the game, and William Mills, who won valuable possession from a series of well-contested mauls. It was also good to see the return of Toby Rossiter, who put in a series of well executed tackles to deny the visitors space.

It was left to Dan Fairlie to wrap-up victory with the last move of the game, bursting away from the Scarlets' defence to cross for a crucial score.

In spite of the narrow scoreline, this was a much-improved performance from the Tenby boys, who knew immediately that they had been in a tough game. Pembroke showed that they had improved significantly during the course of the season and the Seasiders will have to work hard in the coming weeks if they are to maintain their excellent run of form.
