Tyler, an eight-year-old English Springer Spaniel, returned to the UK last week to enjoy his retirement after working seven years as an explosive detection dog in Afghanistan and Iraq. And what was the first treat for this special dog on his return home? No, not a Boneo or a tin of Pal, but a holiday in Tenby with former handler Simon Mallin! Simon first met Tyler in 2005 in Iraq as his handler; they bounded while working under extreme conditions and in a deadly environment. In late 2008, Simon returned to the UK and formed his own training academy 'Malpeet K9 Academy', which was featured last year in the popular ITV series called 'Top Dogs'. Last year, Simon became concerned about Tyler's future after hearing his ex-employer was pulling out of Afghanistan. With help from an animal rescue charity called Nowzad in Kabul and some public donations, Simon managed to locate Tyler in Afghanistan and bring him home. After reuniting with Simon, he is now enjoying his retirement life with Simon in Cardiff and serves as Malpeet K9 Academy's mascot.
