Tenby Sea Cadets have had a very busy summer season, in addition to their normal twice weekly training sessions at Tenby harbour.

Every effort was made to have a good annual inspection by Commander Peter White, Royal Navy on June 6. The staff and cadets completed their ceremonial divisions and inspection, then went on to complete the evolutions set to assess their training.

The cadets historical section gave them the chance to present the 150 years of Tenby's lifeboats with a full illuminated display. The next test was for navigation and the cadets produced boats, rocks and buoys to demonstrate all the rules for preventing collision at sea, with lights and sound signals. The Unit passed the inspection with a satisfactory result.

The day following the inspection the cadets travelled to Carmarthen to receive the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal certificate from the Lord Lieutenant of Dyfed.

On June 29, the cadets were helping out at Castlemartin at the SSAFFA forces open day.

The following day the cadets travelled to Port Talbot to take part in the Welsh district regatta.

The Tenby pulling crew of cadets J. Thomas, S. Bradfield, O. Poole, T. Dortez with Angelo Fecci as coxswain came fourth racing against the heavier crews from the larger south-west Welsh towns.

This has been Tenby Unit's year for boating successes with Angelo Fecci and Tommy Dortez winning sailing honours and Gareth Davies canoeing prizes. Gareth Davies won a gold medal in the spring canoe races at Bristol in the Welsh and Southwestern championships and now goes on to represent Wales and the Southwest in the United Kingdom championships in September.

Gareth also has to fit in taking part in the Navy Days Arena Demonstration team at Plymouth during August.

Tenby Sea Cadets have also assisted Tenby and Saundersfoot Lions International with their paella evening at Tenby harbour.

The latest success for Tenby cadets boating was Tommy Dortez's success at Plymouth. Tommy was sailing Toppers as a member of the Welsh Sea Cadet team. The winds were very light force 1 to 3 during the weekend but Tommy did well to get two thirds and a 14th place, so helping the Welsh team to gain a second place overall.

Whilst Tommy was sailing at Plymouth, the Tenby unit staff, committee and cadets were cooking hundreds of Welsh cakes for unit funds during the Tenby Spectacular.

The staff and cadets during this period of boating could not relax their ceremonial and marching skills. During July they trained and took part in the District Guard of Honour for the golden jubilee and RNLI celebrations at Pembroke Castle and St. David's Cathedral.

The unit welcomed Wayne Bradfield as a newly appointed civilian instructor and Petty Officer Peter Sherwood who has recently moved to the area from Chelmsford.

The Tenby Unit are still anxious to encourage more adults to assist with training cadets over the very wide range of skills, so why not look in at the unit on a Tuesday or Friday evening.
