Tenby’s long standing sea cadets organisation has been given a boost following a well-attended meeting where a new board of trustees were elected.
A good response was received by the group after coverage in the Observer where a plea was issued for volunteers to come forward to form a management team and secure the future of the charity, which had been operating with minimal volunteer numbers for some time, leading to fears for its future.
Town councillors also urged support for the group with Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane stating that it would be a ‘great shame’ if the organisation folded, and her colleague Clr. Laurence Blackhall commenting that the unit gave a ‘tremendous commitment to the town’.
An ‘urgent meeting’ held at Tenby’s Salvation Hall, to discuss the matter took place on April 30, attended by Mr. Craig Girling-Jones, Volunteer and Business Support Manager, of South West Area Sea Cadets, who said that there was a ‘fantastic turnout’ with over 30 people attending
“It is great news for the unit, and wonderful to see such good community spirit,” he said.
“We have been able to elect a new board of trustees, all bringing a range of skills from the community, who are keen to see the unit continue,” he added.
The outgoing chair, Oliver Matthews, will now be working with the new team, led by Llewellyn Williams and eight new trustees.
Tenby Sea Cadets meet every Tuesday and Thursday night at their headquarters at Tenby harbour, between 7 and 9 pm.
