Sunday racing

The first of the club's summer series of races took place on Sunday in bright sunny conditions and a brisk force three to four south-westerly. Race officer Paul Redford set a triangular course with an upwind start at the Monkstone mark, in to the harbour and then out to the eastern, gybing there and back to Monkstone.

A modest early season fleet came to the line and at a competitive start Dan Jackson showed the way with a pin end start on port just crossing the conventional starboard tackers.

It paid to go out to sea and at the windward mark, it was Dan in his RS600, followed by Alistairs Mackay and Knibb in their Osprey, Mike Stace and Deanna Morton in their Osprey, Paul and Anthea Evenden in their Osprey, Ted Lewis and Matt Goldwait in their Osprey, Max Randles in his RS600 and John McKellor in his much slower Comet bringing up the rear.

The reach to the eastern was tightish, making spinnaker handling difficult in the fresh breeze; Ted and Matt hoisted promptly and made steady progress through the fleet. Mike and Alistair also hoisted spinnakers, but found it too tight. At the gybe it was Dan from Ted and Matt, Paul and Anthea, Mike and Deanna, and the Alistairs. Max was finding the going tough in his new flying machine and John plugging away at the back.

On the second lap, Mike and Deanna retired and the Alistairs passed Paul and Anthea. So Dan took the win on corrected time, followed by Ted and Matt, with the Alistairs in third.

A second race followed immediately over the same course. Dan once again got away to a good start and took the win on corrected time, with the minor positions also seeing a repeat of the first race.

Sailing News for our 75th year

As mentioned in previous articles, the complete programme of racing fixtures and training is now on the website. Fixture cards are available at the club and copies have been sent out to members.

The first Cruiser race is on Easter Monday, April 25, with 16 races planned for the season. Junior sail training will start in April. We have taken delivery of some new club dinghies which will be available for use by our more experienced juniors.

This being our 75th year, we are planning some celebration events - watch this space!

Junior

Registration

The next junior registration evening is Wednesday, April 13, at 6.30 pm.

New Boats Launch Evening

We have acquired, for the junior section, a fleet of new Optimists and Toppers due to a great deal of fundraising. On Wednesday, April 20, there will be a formal launch of our new acquisitions attended by representatives of several organisations who, by their generous donations, enabled the club to replenish its junior fleet.

The junior fleet constantly needs updating due to heavy usage.

To this end there will be a concert given by Tenby Male Choir on Thursday, May 5, at St. Mary's Church. Members please support the junior section.

Jam Evening

The next acoustic jam is scheduled for Monday, April 11. Don't miss it.

Darts

Some strange events happen throughout the universe. Such an event happened last Friday at the club. We won!

For some inexplicable reason we struck a modicum of form which took the opposition by surprise. Bob 'steady' Wilcox led the charge, with captain Terry Evans securing the unexpected win with some scintillating dart throwing. Vice-captain Colin Parmenter also struck form to secure the masters.

The doubles pairing of Bob 'steady' Wilcox and Dave 'random' Balshaw secured a rare doubles win, as did the self-proclaimed 'dream team' of John 'double eight, double eight' Akrill and Dave 'the shirt' Stewart-Walvin.

Celebrations are still continuing, but will success go to our heads?

We are at home this evening to the Bowling Club who have had some success against us in previous matches.

We will need to be on top form if we are to continue our celebrations. Watch this space.

Wine-Tasting Evening

The commodore invites members and friends to a wine-tasting evening to be held at the club tomorrow (Saturday).

The evening is being sponsored by Molson-Coors, providing members and friends various wines from around the world for members to taste.

Please gather at the club at 7.30 for an 8 pm start.

Fitting-Out Supper

The fitting-out steak evening scheduled for Saturday, April 16, has now been re-arranged for Saturday, April 23. Would members and friends please note.
