Tenby's Surflink Rowing Club raised almost £1,000 by competing in a charity row along London's River Thames. Back in September, Tenby ladies' and men's Celtic longboat rowing teams took part in the prestigious Thames Great River Race. A gruelling 24-mile course, the race started at Richmond and saw participants row to Greenwich, taking in many of London's famous sights along the way. A total of 288 boats took part, the furthest travelling from Washington DC, America, while other entries from Holland, Germany, Norway and Ireland, made it a truly international event. There were a variety of traditional boats, including Celtic longboats, Cornish gigs, pilot gigs, Thames Waterman Cutters, Rover Tay gigs, dragon boats and many others. The charity the Tenby rowers chose to support was the West Wales Macmillan Cancer Relief Nurses, and the two boats raised a staggering £970.08. A big thank you goes to all individuals and businesses for their support, sponsorship and donations, without which the two Tenby teams would not have been able to take part. Sponsors included: Paul Slack, of Town and Country Roofing; Scott Sarrionandia, of SMS Plumbing; Lesley Fisher, of Tenby House Hotel; Jason Rossiter, of the Hope and Anchor; Tim Rowe, of the Gower Hotel; and Wayne Warlow and Peter Winton, of Willow Carpentry. The Tenby ladies' team, the 'Oarsome Pullers' in their boat 'Oarsome' were Lorraine Jones, Sally Rowe, Pam Quinn, Rachel Hughes, Glenda Hughes and Emily Boot. They came 164th, covering the course in two hours, 57 minutes, 43 seconds. The Tenby men's team, the 'Tenby Sharks' in their boat 'Summer Spectacular', were Tim Deere-Jones, Ben Crockford, Nick Tebbutt, Gary James, Kate Drinkwater and Elaine Tebbutt. They were positioned a very respectable 50th place overall, finishing in two hours, 40 minutes, 45 seconds. This year's race will be on September 16 and the charity money raised will go towards funding a fourth Macmillan Cancer Nurse in South West Wales. Footnote: Tenby Surflink Rowing Club will be holding a Round Caldey Race on Sunday, June 25, starting and finishing at the South Beach, Tenby. It is expected to be a spectacular day's rowing with up to 30 boats competing. Anyone interested in following the race and also providing cover as a safety boat is more than welcome.
