Friends and family of Adam Muskett of Tenby took on a charity challenge, raising a magnificent £11,558 in memory of him and his partner; with a memorial bench also being introduced overlooking the seaside town’s South Beach.
On Sunday, March 16, The Wigan Run Festival saw Adam’s closest friends and sister Hannah run Wigan Half Marathon in his memory, two days before what would have been his 28th birthday.
Tragically Adam was killed in a traumatic Road Traffic Collision in June 2024, along with his girlfriend Katie Worrell. Their passing has left huge holes in the lives of family and friends.
Inspired by Adam’s love of Wigan Athletic FC and the close proximity of the run festival to his birthday, a group of his close friends had the seed of an idea to run in his memory, and this unfolded into the incredibly emotional, supportive and inspiring event that transpired.
Will Davies speaking on behalf of the group said: “When we realised how close the Wigan half marathon was to Adam's birthday, we decided it was an opportunity we couldn’t miss. It was a very emotional weekend but it was lovely to come together as a group and celebrate Adams birthday in a fitting way”.
A large supporting group moved between accessible points along the course to cheer the amazing 17 runners along, everyone present being motivated by their love for Adam, and with hardly a dry eye to be seen.
Adam’s Mum and Dad, Helen and Andrew said: “We are so incredibly proud and thankful to all the runners and supporters who travelled all the way up to Wigan to participate in the run for Adam’s birthday.
“It meant so much to us as a family to see and feel the love they have for Adam, and although tough it provided us with comfort and memories that are so special and important in our grief.”
The boys wish to thank everyone who supported them in their fundraising efforts as they have raised the incredible amount of £11,558 to provide three memorial benches with the remaining funds going to the Road Safety Charity - Brake. Two out of three benches have already been installed and provide places of great comfort and support for family and friends.
The family and friends also want to thank Tenby Town Council and Pembrokeshire County Council for allowing installation of the benches at the Esplanade in Tenby (pictured during presentation of the cheque to Brake on Saturday, December 6), and also for the bench at the Tenby Cemetery.
A further bench at St Michael’s Cemetery, Lamphey for Katie’s family is shortly due to be installed.
The remaining money was presented to Helen Shayle from Brake, the road safety charity who have provided and are still providing both families and friends with invaluable support. Brake aims to stop road deaths, campaign for safer roads and support victims.
Hearts are broken but the love for two special young people will remain forever; with thanks going to everyone who contributed.
The incredible 17 runners were: Ceri Brace, Jim Brace, Scott Cowper, Will Davies, Joel Downes, Louis Elston, Connor Ennis, Dan Evans, Tom Harries, Luke Hartland, Steve Jones, Eve Kidney, Sam Lewis, Alex Moore (who travelled from Brazil!), Hannah Muskett, Harriet Sleight and Spencer Williams.
