Plans to transfer a longstanding Tenby estate agents business, to a former joke shop and fancy dress outlet have been put forward to the National Park.

The plans [Reference: NP/25/0652/FUL] for a change of use from shop unit to office use; new first floor office space, replacement windows and shopfront; Repairs to fabric, at 2-4 Ventnor House, Griggles, Warren Street, have been submitted to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority.

The ‘change of use’ application was discussed at the most recent meeting of Tenby Town Council, with members offering no objections to the plans.

Also giving their views to PCNPA, were Tenby Civic Society who stated on the plans: “We prefer replacement sash windows in Georgian and Victorian Buildings in Tenby to be in wood, particularly the Conservation Areas , as here.

“Full window details should be requested to ensure replacement windows are fully in character with the originals and the rest of the street to maintain the character of the building and the Conservation Area.

“The hours of use should be conditioned to daytime to protect residential amenity.

“As this appears to transfer Birt’s business from St Julian’s Street where there is parking, Highways (department) views on more on street parking in Warren Street should be sought.”

After ensuring that generations of Tenby revellers and ‘trick or treaters’ looked their most stylish, silly or scary - Griggles closed its doors back in 2019, when proprietor Roland Grigg described as the seaside resort’s real life answer to ‘Mr. Benn’s shopkeeper’ retired after nearly 50 years at the helm.

Birt and Co who have submitted the application, are currently have offices at Lock House on St Julian Street.

The views of both the Town Council and Civic Society will be passed onto PCNPA’s development management committee, who will consider the application in due course.
